For the players to retaliate with much more here, they'll be literally asking for money that doesn't exist.

But...

Why does a large, structured deal need to be put in place for this to be solved? If a series of teams can't afford to pay a series of players their asking prices, then they don't sign. If these players can't find anyone to pay the asking price, they either don't play or they lower their asking price. This is precisely why Latrell Sprewell and Barry Bonds "retired" in their respective manners.
