Using Dry Ice for Fishing

Anyone ever used dry ice for keeping fish? If so, how much is enough? They say 5-10 pounds will last over 24 hours. Have y'all used more, less had good experiences or bad? I was thinking of starting to use it since there is a place here in town to get some.

Don't let anything too close to it or it will freeze and burn.
If you add regular ice to it make sure the dry ice stays dry or it will 'boil'. Also, if you add regular ice it's going to turn a large portion of it into one solid block of ice.
That said, it can keep for more than 24 hours easily in a decent ice chest. I use it on longer trips to keep beer or food cold for about three days. But like I said earlier, anything touching it is going to freeze solid.

You can put various amounts of dry ice into a suitable container with the right amount of water and then cap it. If the container is sunk in the right spot it will yield fish in that area. Is that what you mean by using dry ice for fishing?

I like that idea, but i meant for keeping fish cold while offshore instead of buying 50-100 lbs of ice

It cools well. Especially if you can get it ABOVE whatever you want to cool. It's a lot colder than ice.
You suspend it from the top of an ice chest without touching the fish and put some ice in the bottom and you'd be golden I would suspect.

Spend your money on a 5 day marine ice chest and ice you buy at a 7-11 will last 2-3 days.

IMO best place to get ice is one of those Twice the ice trailers. Hard to beat $1.50 for 20lbs bulk ice.

Somebody should really put together a map of all the Twice the ice locations...the always seem hidden for some reason

No doubt the key to the whole thing is a better ice chest. And for what dry ice costs, it wouldn't take you long to get one. I used dry ice for keeping a 'dry' ice chest with foodstuffs in it because I hate when a sammich gets wet in a damn ice chest and it doesn't seem to matter how many zip locks you put them in. If you put it in an ice chest on regular ice, it WILL get wet.

One of the reasons I am interested in dry ice is that I dont have "fishy/slimy" water in a fish box and I defiantly like the idea of keeping things dry. I can get the dry ice for $8 for a 10 lb block. It should be able to do what regular wet ice can do better and Ive heard that it will "flash freeze" the fish to help keep them fresher. Maybe its a waste of time and energy, maybe not, thats why i come to the experts of the OB.

Last time I also bought some chicken salad, stuck in in my ice chest and a loaf of bread in a compartment of my boat. I just made my sandwiches as I needed.

That's a good price. And it will do what you're talking about. Just wear gloves when you're handling it. Your skin will stick right to it otherwise.

Have a small ice maker in ODK (outdoor kitchen) and I pick up the bags that are left unused at those ice houses. (One 4 miles from my house).

Don't put the dry ice too close to your beers, especially if they are glass bottles.

I want to buy a block and see how long it will last in my yeti. I won it a few weeks ago and since then I haven't been impressed. I bought two bags of ice for a week at my camp and it didn't seem to keep that well (right at two days). I have two cheap ice chests that seem to keep just as good. I'd like to try this dry ice thing.

From what I've read the only way you'll get the performance you'd expect out the yeti is to ice down the ice chest before you go out. Just throw a bag in the day before then when you go to pack drain it all out and pack it like you would normally.
Read that on a forum with guys talking about how to keep ice when they go offshore. Course it seems like it would work with any ice chest
