Played a few hours last night. Unbelievable fun. More challenging with 2 portal guns (4 portals)and the chance to hit/not hit the switch and kill your buddy for no reason was funny.
GlaDos is as fun to listen to as every.

I know nothing about this game. What's the skinny?

The game consists primarily of a series of puzzles that must be solved by teleporting the player's character and simple objects using the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device (ASHPD, also dubbed the "portal gun"), a unit that can create inter-spatial portals between flat planes. The player character, Chell, is challenged by an AI named GLaDOS (Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating system) to complete each puzzle in the Aperture Science Computer-Aided Enrichment Center using the portal gun with the promise of receiving cake when all the puzzles are completed. The unusual physics allowed by the portal gun are the emphasis of this game and are an extension of a similar portal concept in Narbacular Drop; many of the team members from the DigiPen Institute of Technology that worked on Narbacular Drop were hired by Valve for the creation of Portal.
I didn't want to write a summary so I found one on wikipedia. Its for Portal 1.
This video sums it up pretty well.

And if that write up still has you saying "ehh...", just try it out. I was completely uninterested with the game until they made it free on Steam for a few weeks a while back, and it's no lie one of my favorite games.

What system do you have? Find a friend or somebody with it, hell some one on here might let you borrow the first one.
The first one was the most rewarding game I ever played. It was like that first time you beat minesweeper, after every level. Plus there is cake.
Can't wait to get into the second one after this damn paper I'm writing.

They do a pretty good job at getting you pretty efficient at it before they throw anything difficult at you.
I'm actually jealous, I wish I could go back and play P1 again like I had never played it.

You won't find portal 1 to be frustrating. It actually has a nice way to teach you all the mechanics while allowing you to see there is something deeper happening in the background.
It doesn't take long to play through the game, but you should see why it is so cool after awhile.

I haven't played co-op yet, but the game itself is pretty amusing.

Holy shite. I just finished the singleplayer campaign on Portal 2... fricking amazing. If you thought the first game was great wait till you play this one.

Is single player long enough to warrant a purchase and what is the re-playability? Is it really worth the money?
I think I am going to get it but how should I go about convincing the girlfriend to play co-op with me? Can you play split screen co-op?

I think it's absolutely worth it. The single players is about 3 times as long as the first game, and the story is great. I read somewhere that they're going to be adding a level designer of some sort so the re-playability would be very high if that is the case. Either way, the coop in this game is some of the best multiplayer that I've played. Consoles have split screen co-op.
