I'm weak when it comes to IDing medium to small shore birds

I facking hate ID'ing sandpipers and similar shore birds. Gulls too. Argh.

After 3 hours of driving the snowy fields of central Wisconsin I had given up on the Snowy Owls and then came across two of them while driving back to the interstate. Funny how that works. There are a lot more Snowy Owls around than usual this winter. Usually that means that their normal food source (lemmings in the tundra) is scarce and unfortunately a LOT of these owls will not survive because they are not used to hunting this far south.

Cloudy day today unfortunately so I've had to play some editing tricks to get these to look even semi-decent. There were tons of Rough Legged Hawks which are only in the lower 48 in the winter and even then can be tough to find (they are never in the southeastern states). They have a very distinct pattern under the wings.

I really wish we had a thread dedicated to birding where we could post pictures, discuss trips, ask questions, etc. I had to go through pages and pages of the scenery thread trying to relocate the picture of black-bellied whistling ducks in flight. We could call it the Outdoor Birding Spot, or similar. Don't know if there's enough interest, but I'll give it a shot. Meet me on that thread within the next day or so. I'll be posting some questions about your trip.

Really nice pictures, BTW, esp. with all the cloud cover.
