2011 Golden Globe Awards Predictions
(Movies Only!)

BEST MOTION PICTURE - DRAMA

The Nominees:

“Black Swan”
“The Fighter”
“Inception”
“The King’s Speech”
“The Social Network”

WINNER - “The King’s Speech”

My mind is telling me that “The Social Network” has this in the bag because of all the other awards that have been bestowed upon it thus far. However, the Globes have been known to shake things up here in recent years and my gut feeling says that they will throw a wrench into the system once again this year. “The King’s Speech” is a British film and the people who vote on the Globes (the Hollywood Foreign Press Association) tend to like non-American movies these days.

BEST MOTION PICTURE - COMEDY OR MUSICAL

The Nominees:

“Alice in Wonderland
“Burlesque”
“The Kids Are All Right”
“Red”
“The Tourist”

WINNER: “The Kids Are All Right”

This one is a no-brainer and the vote won’t even be close. “The Kids Are All Right” is the only legitimately good movie in this category. How “The Tourist” ever made it into this category - seeing as it’s not a true comedy and it’s not any good - I have no idea.

BEST DIRECTOR - MOTION PICTURE

The Nominees:

Darren Aronofsky - “Black Swan”
David Fincher - “The Social Network”
Tom Hooper - “The King’s Speech”
Christopher Nolan - “Inception”
David O. Russell - “The Fighter

WINNER: David Fincher - “The Social Network”

“The King’s Speech” may or may not capture the big prize for Best Motion Picture - Drama but, no matter what, Fincher has this Golden Globe in the bag. He’s about as virtual of a lock as one can be without already knowing the winner of the award. His work on “The Social Network” was just superb.

BEST ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE - DRAMA

The Nominees:

Jesse Eisenberg - “The Social Network”
Colin Firth - “The King’s Speech”
James Franco - “127 Hours”
Ryan Gosling - “Blue Valentine”
Mark Wahlberg - “The Fighter”

WINNER: Colin Firth - “The King’s Speech”

Much like David Fincher in the directorial category, Colin Firth is all but assured to get the Golden Globe for this category. He’s worthy of it. His performance in “The King’s Speech” was nothing short of phenomenal.

BEST ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE - COMEDY OR MUSICAL

The Nominees:

Johnny Depp - “Alice in Wonderland”
Johnny Depp - “The Tourist”
Paul Giamatti - “Barney’s Vision”
Jake Gyllenhaal - “Love And Other Drugs”
Kevin Spacey - “Casino Jack”

WINNER: Kevin Spacey - “Casino Jack”

This category is very difficult to call but I’m going to go ahead and give it to Kevin Spacey. Paul Giamatti and Jake Gyllenhaal are the competition because Johnny Depp has NO chance of winning for “Alice in Wonderland” or “The Tourist,” so go ahead and throw him out.

BEST ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE - DRAMA

The Nominees:

Halle Berry - “Frankie And Alice”
Nicole Kidman - “Rabbit Hole”
Jennifer Lawrence - “Winter’s Bone”
Natalie Portman - “Black Swan”
Michelle Williams - “Blue Valentine”

WINNER: Natalie Portman - “Black Swan”

Portman is as much of a lock for this category as Firth and Fincher are for their respective categories. No one else has a chance here. I thought Natalie Portman’s performance in “Black Swan” was pretty amazing so the win is well-deserved.

BEST ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE - COMEDY OR MUSICAL

The Nominees:

Annette Bening - “The Kids Are All Right”
Anne Hathaway - “Love And Other Drugs”
Angelina Jolie - “The Tourist”
Julianne Moore - “The Kids Are All Right”
Emma Stone - “Easy A”

WINNER: Annette Bening - “The Kids Are All Right”

There really is no serious threat in this category for Bening. The Golden Globe is pretty much in the bag for her. Now if she could just win an Oscar….

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE

Christian Bale - “The Fighter”
Michael Douglass - “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps”
Andrew Garfield - “The Social Network”
Jeremy Renner - “The Town”
Geoffrey Rush - “The King’s Speech”

WINNER: Christian Bale - “The Fighter”
Yes, Batman will win the Golden Globe on Sunday night. Geoffrey Rush is his only real competition in the category but I think Bale will overcome it and win himself the first legitimate award of his career. Well done, Mr. Bale.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE

Amy Adams - “The Fighter”
Helena Bonham Carter - “The King’s Speech”
Mila Kunis - “Black Swan”
Melissa Leo - “The Fighter”
Jacki Weaver - “Animal Kingdom”

WINNER: Melissa Leo - “The Fighter”

This is going to be a very close and hard to predict finish. In my opinion, Melissa Leo is the frontrunner in this category and that is why I am giving the win to her. However, don’t be surprised if Jacki Weaver sneaks up on her and snatches the Globe out of her hand at the finish line. Amy Adams is also a possibility but I think she’ll have to wait a little while longer before she wins the award.

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE FILM

The Nominees:

“Despicable Me”
“How To Train Your Dragon”
“The Illusionist”
“Tangled”
“Toy Story 3”

WINNER: “Toy Story 3”

How could the Golden Globes not give the award to Woody, Buzz, and the gang? “Toy Story 3” is sure to take home the award in this category. The only other option is “How To Train Your Dragon” but I am 99.9% sure that it won’t be able to pull off the upset.

BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM

The Nominees:

“Biutiful” (Mexico, Spain)
“The Concert” (France)
“The Edge” (Russia)
“I Am Love” (Italy)
“In A Better World” (Denmark)

WINNER: “Biutiful”

BEST SCREENPLAY - MOTION PICTURE

The Nominees:

Simon Beaufoy & Danny Boyle - “127 Hours”
Christopher Nolan - “Inception”
Stuart Blumberg & Lisa Cholodenko - “The Kids Are All Right”
David Seidler - “The King’s Speech”
Aaron Sorkin - “The Social Network”

WINNER: Aaron Sorkin - “The Social Network”

BEST ORIGINAL SCORE - MOTION PICTURE

The Nominees:

Alexandre Desplat - “The King’s Speech”
Danny Elfman - “Alice in Wonderland”
A.R. Rahman - “127 Hours”
Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross - “The Social Network”
Hans Zimmer - “Inception”

WINNER: Alexandre Desplat - “The King’s Speech”

BEST ORIGINAL SONG - MOTION PICTURE

The Nominees:

Bound to You - “Burlesque”
Coming Home - “Country Strong”
I See the Light - “Tangled”
There’s a Place for Us - “The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader”

WINNER: I See the Light - “Tangled”

I'm happy to say I've only watched three movies from that list: The Kids are All Right, Winter's Bone and Despicable Me. Despicable Me was far and away the best movie out of the three I've seen.

I'm sorry, I'm sure the King's Speech is a decent film, but I hate it when those "English Wussy" movies win our awards.

And was The Social Network really that good?

I thought The Hurt Locker blew and everyone loved it last year.

This has to be the worst nominee list the GG have ever produced.

I would have a bit of a problem with this, considering that it felt like at least half the movie was not an original score. The entire last scene (the climax and ending of the film) is excerpts from Beethoven's 7th Symphony and 5th Piano Concerto. Mozart is also thrown in heavily throughout the film.

Yeah I don't know if it is because of the subject matter or not but The Kids are All Right was pretty overrated. I mean it wasn't a bad movie at all, just nothing too special or groundbreaking.
