how can they let go of rich rod whenever he has improved his record every year since he started?

No he's not. Stanford has been there before and they have had a history of having good teams. Stanford does not equal the challenge of a Vanderbilt, Tulane or Baylor from a coaching or program perspective. Bill Walsh had good teams there, Dennis Green coached them to 8-3 in his last season and Tyron Willingham took them to the Rose Bowl.
