What muzzleloader do yall recommend, not wanting to break the bank but don't want a cheap one either. I don't know much about them. Also what kind of scope do yall recommend? Would you put the same type on your muzzleloader as you would your centerfire rifle? I thank yall for your suggestions.

I would def not put the same scope as I have on my rifle as i would put on my muzzleloader. So, I have a Pro Hunter and am prob gonna get a muzzleloading barrel for chirstmas and I'm going to put prob a 200$ or so scope on it.

Have liked my TC Encore for several years, w/Pentax Lightseeker II scope.. Neither one is cheap, but, I also use my Encore with a 7mag barrel, so now I have an expensive muzzleloader and an expensive single shot rifle... It's like ford vs gm,, personal taste, but, buy the best that you can afford, if you plan on keeping it for a lifetime...

I heard the range on a muzzleloader sighted in is in the 200 yard range. Is this correct? Whats the longest range yall would fell confident on touching off a round?

200 is possible,,,, with practice and shooting at different distances and noting where the hit is at every range.. Just like a rifle,,, knowing pretty much exactly where you hit at all distances is the key.

I have a Rossi 50 cal MZ with a Burris Fullfield II with the Ballistic Plex reticile. The MZ is about $175 and the scope about the same.

If you are willing to spend the time at the range, using and practicing with the Ballistic Plex reticile, or similar reticile if you get a different brand scope, then you can realistically and reliably make a 200 yard shot. I have made a 206 yrd kill (with a witness - ha ha)and am comfortable at that range. Having and using a range finder is a necessity as well.

Set it up with a 240-250 grain sabot round like the Hornady SST,100 grains of powder ( I like the 777 powder) set scope to hit about 1 inch high at 100 yards, and each corresponding lower mark will be for an additional 25 yards further out to 200 yards. It is not exact, but if you shoot for a chest shot, you will be in the kill zone.

I can easily afford a much more expensive MZ and scope, but since the Rossi/Burris combo does everything I want it to plus, I see no need to spend the extra money.

Hope this helps and good luck.

Knowing where that round is going to hit at a long distance is key, your right. I don't want to shot one to far off and wound the animal. I rather not shot at all than take that chance.

Where are you hunting? Depending on what state you are in. I would recommend a 45-70. You can get the H&R Handy rifle for $225 and I would put a Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40.

Yeah, if you are in Louisiana, forget a muzzleloader and get a .45-70 or a .444.

I felt like dancing when they made it a primitive firearm season . . . no more cleaning a muzzleloader!!!!

I do most of my deer hunting in Harrison and Marion county Texas, close to Marshall and Jefferson. They have a 2 week season starting this year but book says it has to be loaded from the muzzle. I don't think 45-70 would fly over there. I would call Texas DWF before I chose something like that.

thompson center triumph. the breech plug can be removed by hand with no tool which makes it easier to clean. i have a leupold muzzleloader scope with aiming points built into the reticle. the aiming points go up to 250 yards, i think, although you better do some practicing if you want to shoot a deer at that range. i have mine sighted in two inches high at 100 yds, which should be dead on up to 150 yards. I hunt in the Basin, so i can't really see any further than that.

Thanks, I didn't know that some companies build scopes for muzzleloaders. I don't think I would take a shot over 200 yards with one. I
