Dawn of the Dead (2004)

Needed a zombie fix waiting on the finale of TWD so I just watched the 2004 Dawn of the Dead.
I've seen the Day of the Dead remake from a couple of years ago and it blew goats. I decided to take a chance on Dawn of the Dead based on it's 73% RT rating and hot damn if it wasn't great. Not sure how I missed it. I'm almost ashamed.
Good cast with real actors and great directing.
Best made zombie movie top to bottom.

Not a huge fan of the genre or anything, but I totally agree. The intro scene was truly epic.

I especially liked the fact that as time went on, the zombies slowly decayed more and more.

It's the unrated version that is available on Apple TV. Was the full on Zombie baby sequence in the original?

This is the one where she is in the house with her husband, he gets bit, she hops in the car, and the neighborhood is going to shite and then the camera goes to the "top down" perspective right? Loved that movie.

The orginal is the best zombie film of all time, but the remake is great. It's what a remake should be.

That had the best cast, best acting, best direction and best production value of any Romero connected Zombie movie by a long shot.
Shaun of the Dead and 28 Days are probably it's only competition for best Zombie movie ever but for different reasons.

Romero makes awful movies now, but there's no denying the brilliance of Dawn. The remake is great fun, but the orginal just isn't a great horror movie but a 'great movie.'

I wear no Romero-colored glasses. Outside of Night and Dawn, Romero has been a pretty bad filmmaker (and, yes, I have seen the putrid Survival entry).
The fact remains, the original Dawn can't be touched in terms of action, tone, comedy, and satire.
The new Dawn is a sad imitation that uses budget and cast as a way to gloss over its lack of substance and ideas. I've just never understood why people thought this film was so good. And I've seen it several times. Because it's newer and had a higher budget with more contemporary effects?

i liked the new one, but i was not blown away like many were

Because it's a great action movie. That's all it tries to be with a few nods to the original like Ken Foree's cameo as a priest. It has great gore effects, it doesn't shy away from sensitive subject matter (zombie baby), and the characters are generally likeable.

If the Dawn remake were an original film, it's possible it could've stood on its own. Since it's a remake of a classic, however, it's impossible not to make comparisons.
When it comes down to it, the original Dawn was about something. And when it was funny, it was genuinely funny. And when it was trying to play the terror card, it could be downright brutal.

Not really other than than the fact that they share the same name and have the same basic setting. They are two very different movies with two very different goals. The original was trying to be a comic book-esque satire about consumerism. The remake was just trying to be a fun, fast-paced action movie. Both succeeded.

I thought it was pretty cool. Honestly don't remember ever seeing a zombie baby in another movie unless you count Dead Alive
