This weeks Sports Ilustrated has an article in it about why their will never be a play off in Division I football. The bottom line is "American Greed" from the AD's, coaches, and bowl repsentatives. They say the only way it will happen is if the US Justice Departments gets involved for Anti-trust violations.
I used to be strongly in favor of a playoff system, but I've really cooled since then. One of the factors that makes CFB unique is that every game counts--every frickin week. No matter who you're playing. It keeps us up at night and on our toes.
You simply can't mail too many in in college (at least not in the SEC).
Now, we could tighten restrictions on BCS bowls...i.e. You can't play 10 shitbag teams with losing schedules and qualify for the NCG.

I don't think it's an antitrust violation. If the DOJ were to act on the BCS, I think they would lose.

If playoff you would still want to be the higher seed so you wouldn't rest your players. Also most college level playoffs involve possible home games as people wouldn't want to travel half way across the country for a first round playoff game. So you would be playing for home field as well so the games would still have meaning.
