Crowton might be good afterall. One stat we should start observing

Last year, we had a terrible offense. No one in their right mind would have really blamed this on any particular player as much as they did Crowton. However, these last two games, we've seen LSU exploit a not so good defense, and a GREAT passing defense through the air with open recievers on almost every play.
I remember looking at JJ's stats last year and thinking... he's statistically not bad. I remember thinking how much of a moron Crowton must be and how dumb Miles was for not "giving the ball to Sheperd."
One thing that I think we need to pay attention to on stats is not just attempts and completions, but also keep a record of how many plays started off as passing plays. With Vince Young or Troy Smith, no one would care. However, with 1 yard scrambles, or even sacks... I think this stat has quite a huge impact on our offense. Especially when Lee was not only 9 for 11, or whatever the final stat was, but he was 9 for 11, with 11 passing attempts. That's a lot different than 9 for 11 of 18 passing plays, when the other 7 were 2 yard scrambles or maybe even sacks.
Anyone else think this is a good idea?

GC looks much better when Lee is in the game.

The thing you can tell is that Miles is definitely restricting the offense and having major influence.
I think Crowton's weakness has been developing QBs more than anything. Is he a great OC? Not after year one, but with Les interfering, he's going to be bad.
He has trouble simplifying the offensive scheme which is what hurt him at UO his second year. Basically all Chip Kelly did, outside of coaching up Dixon and co., was simplifying their offense a ton once Crowton left.

I think you make good points. Last night further convinced me that miles is sticking his nose in the offense more than he should. I believe crowton would like J Lee in the game all of the time. It's obvious the playcalling is different with Lee in the game and I think it's crowtons plays your seeing when he is in. I think Miles is the only one pushing for Jefferson to get snaps. Jefferson doesn't understand the offense like Lee does, so the playcalls are severely restricted.
IMO if Crowton had full control of the offense the way Chavis does with the defense, I don't think we would see much of JJ at all and we would have a much more fluid offense

I wonder how much different though. When we look at the end of UT game, JJ was 3 for 10. I wish we had a statistic that said 3 for 10 on how many called passing plays. It seems to me that JJ is having a fair amount of passing plays called for him but he just doesn't throw it. This was definitely an issue last year, but it seems to avoid the stats.

This is actually an excellent point.
Even last year, JJ's completion percentage was artificially inflated because the ball rarely leaves the dude's hand unless guys are running 5 yards in the clear. Otherwise, it's off and running or sack.

I know that Crowton toned down the offense to where it was dysfunctional. I think we all now know why

Assuming that you're implying that we didn't have a QB to run it, yeah... it seems that way. I don't think that we have stuck with Jefferson as long as we have because we perceive some benefit with Jefferson, moreso that changing quarterbacks five times in two years is a bit ridiculous.

I think it's a very good point and is one reason why the offense is has no rythm with JJ at QB.

we saw alot of wrinkles we hadn't seen..
i think the secret playbook was real.

that's because he can do so much more with the playcalling (passes)

The real question is, has crowton really toned down the offense, or does the play calling just seem that way when you look at the misleading "attempts" and not something along the line of "called passes."
ps im not being pro or anti crowton, but I'd hate to see us chase someone out of BR who might have a legitimate reason to stay. (QB and HC inteference)?

If its a QB problem, then Crowton gets a lot of the blame. He chose to ride a certain horse - FOR WAY TOO LONG - and didn't change course, until vocal fans got his and the HC attention.

I think you are seeing the offensive staff limits all of the offense for each QB to hide there flaws.
JJ has difficulty with timing pass game. JL is risky with the football.
I think with JJ the give him rollouts and the read option game (which he has become pretty decent at btw). They don't ask him to make passes he can't do well...slants, screens, etc. His run threat makes him good near the goal line.
With JL you get a much more advanced passer. They give him all the more advanced of these plays and a much more expanded playbook. They don't let him play in moments where a bad int will kill us. They turn him loose if it is the end of the game and we need a two minute drill offense because any situation that keeps us from scoring is bad...so the int threat is no larger then the ineffective drive sputter from JJ.

Serious question:
Why did we waste so much time between Georgia Tech in 2008 and Florida in 2010 to figure out that Jefferson is best on rollouts?

I have never heard anyone with that statistical concept before. The idea may have value. You should track it and keep all of us Rantards abreast...
Still, I do not like GC for OC or Mr. Jefferson as QB. He cannot make throws. For example, I doubt the odds of him making that fade pass to Toliver 1/100 attempts are less than 15%. He does not have the talent to play at this level based on a review of his on the field performance.
Yet there is LM and GC feeding him valuable snaps that could go to JL. A waste of product as I have said before.

I think the biggest problem is having them together. As hard as it is for most to bring back memories of 2008, we had a productive offense then.

Are you under the impression that Crowton is the coach that decides which QB gets the snaps?
Miles is the one making that call. I also think Miles is the coach that called all of those running plays last night in the final possession.
