Just be honest with him
i didnt start hunting until about 6 years ago and I was honest with my buddies about how i wanted to get into it and they were very cool about teaching me everything i needed to know.
if you just tell him you were full of shite he'll prolly treat it as a teaching experience and you'll both have a lot of fun.
Im still learning tricks of the trade from my friends and they really enjoy teaching me shite just as much as i enjoy learning and asking questions
im sure you and this guy can have a similar experience, especially if you think you would like deer hunting and think you can get into it in the future, this would be the best way to go.
