^I don't think he was necessarily friends with him; rather, he's probably trying to protect him and his family. It seems like most of the witches are somehow indebted to certain vampires and do favors for them. It's not necessarily that he himself is evil. He's probably just trying to do a favor so that he and his family aren't jeopardized.
