Stats don't lie.......we are mirroring 09

post form another site:
I have been a long-time reader, but this is my first time to send you an email. God bless Patrick Peterson, but it will not take long before teams just don't kick to him. He can't win every game my himself. And, let's face it he single handedly won that game last night. Without his points and field position, it could have gotten ugly. LSU looked horrible last night. If UNC would have had their full complement of players, this would have not been a contest. There is NO improvement from last year. The offense still has no identity, the play calling is equivalent to an average high school football team. Jefferson still has no vision. He still plays scared and lacks the ability to make quick, smart decisions or reads. The team still couldn't finish a game on offense or defense. They survived, but they were far from finishing anything. And, as a whole they still lacked the ability to execute properly. Here are some interesting stats... last year LSU averaged 59 play
s a game on offense, last night 57 plays. Last year we were in the gutter of college offenses at 302 yds. per game, last night 313 yds. Last year we averaged 5 for 12 attempts (@40%) per game on 3rd down, last night 5 for 12 on 3rd down. Last year, time of possession 27.49, last night 25.25. Last year opponents averaged 70 plays per game, last night 79 plays. They have talent but lack proper coaching. Execution is a coaching issue. Vanilla play calling is a coaching issue. Not utilizing the right personnel is a coaching issue. That performance last night was against 2nd and 3rd teamers with the same results as last year. Thats what I love about stats, there is no bias and they never tell a lie.

Just sayin, take away PP's returns and our offense did not look consistant at all and is falling in line with 09 stats. We need improvemnt!

After one freaking game? Jeeeeesus...

Posted on 9/6/10 at 12:06 pm to the LSUSaint
It's hard to have a good offense when you don't properly use your playmakers.

and we know this after the first game huh.

That was really long but I think you need a few more games under your belt before declaring a trend

So your saying that the fact our stats from the first game are mirroring the season averages from 2009 doesn't give you pause at all?
In light of the objective analysis you are just planning on ignoring it?

My head is saying that but Saturday looked so much like a repeat of 2009. I wanted Crowton gone after last season. I've followed his career and it's the same at every stop (except Tech). We'll see Saturday.

Its one game. Stats are useless right now

No one would argue that the results in the box score and the stat book mirrored last year. But a lot of the little things looked improved from last year, especially Washington last year. The overall blocking was better. (Though it still has a ways to go.) Jefferson was a little better, hitting a deep throw and stepping up in the pocket a couple of times. (Though he still has a ways to go.) I would even argue the play calling was a little better, we didn't swap from one formation extreme to the other every play like we did last year, which really hurt us in building consistency. (Though the play calling still has a ways to go.)

Mark Twain's most insightful quotation, IMHO, was, "There are three kinds of lies. There are lies. There are damnable lies. And there are statistics."

not really. Especially if they show no change from the previous year. In fact, based on these stats from the first game, it appears such production could have been placed into last year's cumulative effort and not leverage the stats in any direction (positively or negatively). Such comparison tells us that it is significant, in that it is not different in any meaningful way from the efforts of last season.

Not only was it just one game, but it was a very very unusual game in multiple respects. You can't draw anything from that.
After LSU has 2 regular season SEC games under its belt, then you can start comparing LSU's SEC stats in 2009 to LSU's SEC stats in 2010. Until then, it really doesn't mean much, besides maybe playcalling/blitzing/substitution patterns.

I did too bro but I did see many positives. If les can keep from stepping on his crank I think the running game will improve, the D will be solid and special things wil happen on special teams. I only see marginal improvement at QB

So he's comparing the stats through 13 games last season.. to 1 game this season.

Answer me this genius, when you have 313 yards of offense, how much more can you hope to have when you also have over 300 yards on kick returns?
That is over 600 yards of field accounted for.
Where do you want our offense to go? Into the stands?
I'll hang up and listen as this group tries to grapple with that concept.

actually it's the correct way to do the analysis. A body of work being used to produce a baseline for the offensive production. That was how the offense shook out last year...overall.
The fact that there was no noticeable difference between the average output last year and our first game shows that there may not be any difference at all in the offense. Especially when you consider the blocking, etc. was better in the first game. This lends credence to the idea that those intangibles were not really the cause for such overall low performance in 2009. that is to say the root of the problem for low offensive production has not been identified or addressed.
