I have launched boats without plugs, and also tried to back them off a trailer with the straps still attached 
Also watched a woman almost lose a 3/4ton chevy at a launch. Tires hit the slick stuff and she went into the launch till the bumper touched. Luckily the truck fishtailed off the concrete and the tires caught some traction on some rubble. This is probably the biggest reason I own a 4x4.

I've done this myself a few times but never sunk anything luckily. Taught myself at the age of 14 to launch a boat.
Have seen some husband and wife teams arguing about pullin up/launching the boat. That is funny stuff.
