wouldn't closing the mouth make it longer?

Yes... If he pinched the tail, them maybe he would have saved them from the hurricane.

I usually pinch the tail and close the mouth to hit the measurement

I don't know about the rodeo, but the fisheries agent told me to "make the fish as long as you can". In other words, to them, mouth open/closed or tail pinched or not, made no diff. Do whatever you want...but when you're done stretching it, if you are under the minimum length you're getting a ticket.
Rodeo judges? Its a crap shoot.

yea I guess bass are one of the exceptions, trout/redfish dont have the jaw that extends when catching prey. Ive gotten so out of touch with bass fishing that I base everything on trout/redfish.

The only way to properly measure a Bass is with a scale. Not a fricking yard stick.

1. Place the fish on its side
on a flat board with the
jaw closed.
2. Squeeze the tail fin
together or turn it in a
way to obtain the
maximum overall length.
3. For species with total
length requirements,
measure in a straight line
from the tip of the snout
to the extreme tip of the
tail fin.
4. For species with fork
length requirements,
measure in a straight line
from the tip of the snout
to the fork of the tail.
5. For species with lower
jaw fork length
requirements, measure
in a straight line from the
tip of the lower jaw to the
fork of the tail.
In federal waters:
6. For species with curved
fork length requirements,
measure from the tip of
the upper jaw to fork of
tail along the contour of
the middle of the body.
7. For species with carcass
length requirements,
measure curve from
posterior edge of gill
opening to anterior
portion of caudal keel.

quote:you are wrong, my friend. Bass are subjected to slot limits and minimal size restrictions to regulate the populations of a given area.. All of which are done according to how many pounds of fish per square mile are desired by the gubment...
