Deflationary Investing?

Several times in the past week or so CNBC has had some very smart money people on asking about investing in a deflationary environment. None of the guest have had a good answer or strategy. I was thinking either TIPS or utility stocks would be good investments along with gold in such a case. What's the answer to this question? We appear to be heading down the road of Japan.......

Might not be a bad idea to look at some of the preferred stocks issued by several Southern Company subsidiaries. Since none of those states have electric deregulation, their profits should remain fairly consistent.
Be careful if they're trading above $25, though, since that's the call price (i.e., Southern Company can unilaterally redeem them for that amount).
When I get home I'll try to look up some ticker symbols for the board.

That protects you in an inflationary period.

Right. Not TIPS. The guy said he was a fan of the 30yr.
