Is Texas an overrated program?

I realize this is not SEC info but we do compete with Texas for recruits and national titles so...
Texas obviously has a solid program and a ton of home grown talent to choose from. However, they only have 1 national championship in the last 40 years. 2005 is it. Prior to that you have to go all the way back to 1970 if Im not mistaken. One national championship in 40 years does not a dynasty make. So what gives?

Yet you post it in the SEC Rant.
There is a More Sports Board that is perfectly capable of flaming such a terrible post.

Texas is the most underachieving program ever.

Overrated in terms of what? In terms of fiscal generation, not in the slightest.

They sure are a butthurt program.

Mack Brown is an overrated Coach.
Also, in some ways I can see the Austin lifestyle going to the player's heads.
Easy to recruit there, but once they get there, they are treated like royalty throughout the city and they probably just dont care about anything but themselves. See Cedric Benson's attitude that he would rather win the Heisman than the National Championship.
I would hate to be a Texas fan.

Texas is also the king of T-shirt fanbases.

They have the most money, best facilities, best recruits, etc...best of the best. I guess 1 NC is kind of underachieving for them.

Without a frickin doubt... with all of the resources they have (recruiting base, and money to hire the best coaches), you have to say that it's one of the most underachieving programs in all of sports.

they have a better chance winning a national title with muschamp as head coach than the underachieving brown.

There was a thread on the MSB the other day talking about Mack Brown being overrated. The major bullet point in that thread was that Mack Brown has won 2 Big12 titles in the past 10 years.
Texas might not be overrated, but Brown is certainly overrated based on his lack of success when it comes to titles.

True, but are we just talking football and NC's only (which are often subjective and include a LOT of things outside of ones control).
Otherwise, Texas excels in most every sport. In baseball, basketball, football, and tons of smaller sports, Texas often puts out championship calibre teams that are often highly ranked and successful.
I would certainly not call them overrated in athletic programs as a whole and consider them very successful in football for the most part though they have often fallen 1 game short of NCs.

Brown is a good coach but not a great coach. He did get UT back on track after some horrible years in the 90s.

He has underachieved severely.

I think the OP was only referring to their football program only. I agree, overall Texas and Florida are the 2 best all round athletic program in the country.

absolutely, much like mack brown is an overrated coach. he has what, 2 big 12 titles in 12 years? all while being in a state where the other schools in the conference have to come in and completely raid if they want any chance of competing for the conference crown. (i realize the SEC has florida, but the LSU's and Alabama's only grab a couple players from there, not half their hauls a la oklahoma with texas.)
Texas might be the easiest state to recruit at, what, half the kids in state are 100% longhorns and most of the rest at least favor UT. 1 NC in 40 years is quite side honestly. 1 NC in the BCS era is sad.

He hasn't gotten the trophies as much as most expect he should but he has won 79 games since 2003. So in 7 years he has won nearly 80 games. He is 2nd in BCS teams during that time in total wins and winning percentage. That's saying a lot.

Mack took over a program similar to what Saban did at LSU (great recruiting base, massive underacheivement). The fewest games he has ever won in his first few years were 9 games.
He has won at least 10 games 9 years IN A ROW.
Winning a subjective NC which depends a lot on what a lot of other teams do in any given year vs double digit wins for almost a decade is a bit difficult to call massive underacheiving even if you have a great recruiting base.
Also, 6 out of the last 10 seasons with 11-13 wins? No less than 9? Only 1 season without at least 10? No worse than 2nd place in the Big 12 South for 12 years and counting.
