Why can't coaches be demoted?

I'm sure I'm gonna get ripped a new one, but if a coach has an astronomical buyout and has 6-6, 7-5, 8-4 seasons...instead of firing him...demote him... I mean, if you're gonna have to pay the buyout anyway whether he's here or there.....why not demote him once the AD and fans want heads to roll...hire a new coach and demote the old one to the Athletic Dept janitor.lol... I guarantee....these coaches with huge arse buyouts will put alot more into their gameplan knowing they can be demoted...instead of them knowing they'll get the money if they're let go. Ya either take the demotion and if you refuse, then you quit....we will not fire you.
Crazy, I know....but why not?

Uh, we're not talking about hourly employees here...
Contracts blow holes in your proposal.

yeah i know contract...I know all that....but what if it was in a contract....I think any coach will sign million dollar contracts no matter what....but what if the contract has in it that after so many seasons with no progression, then they could be demoted....i know it's not in their contract...give me a break....but why couldnt this be put in one?
it sure the hell beats the shite out of after so many seasons with no progression you can be terminated and take your 15 mil with you...
I know WTF.....but why cant it?

Because they sign a little piece of paper that agrees to prevent this from being done, and is enforced by law... Some call it a contract

I understand all about contracts....I understand that it's never been done....and usually, well all of the time these contracts are to save the coach.....the reason i'm asking is that something like this....and i'm not talking about the coach becoming a janitor...lol...it could give the institution some leverage....because the way contracts are now, they have none....somehow...if you're not happy with a coaches results...nevermind....was just asking....

If you don't get why this would not be put in one, then trying to explain it may prove fruitless.
Besides, if it was such a good idea, don't you think that at least ONE university president, AD, attorney, board member, etc. would have thought of it first?

Arkansas State did that about ten yeara ago and I think La. Tech did it with Joe Raymond Peace/

Again...I understand what you are saying....trust me, I understand...its just that there should be something that could be put in a contract to protect the universities....i dont know what...but something....
maybe two year extensions..once the coach has been at a particular school for say 2 years....but then that wouldnt work either because not all schools would do it....
Being fired and getting 10 or 15 mil when you walk out the door is just frickin mind boggling....thats what im getting at...

actually Tubby demoted Hugh Nall from OC back to line coach, if I remember correctly.

And I'm guessing that it didn't work out too well.
No agent would ever let a coach sign that contract, and I don't see why any university would enter into it.
Either way, if a coach fails to live up to expectations it's a lose-lose.
I mean there's no way that a school would want to keep a failing coach in any kind of important position with the team, so that would rule out any kind of coordinator position. So what, you're going to have an unpopular ex-head coach making 1.8 million a year being the defensive backs coach? Oh, and you also have to pay the new head coach about that much, as well.
And, no agent would let a coach sign a contract that said he could get demoted and have his pay reduced to that of a coordinator and must fulfill the rest of his contract.

ok what if a contract was drawn up that said if a head coach was terminated, then he will receive his yearly salary until he is hired as a coach at another university or pro franchise....
nevermind...i'd better stop....lol

Yep. You nailed the single reason that coaches get fired...they simply don't work hard enough and put enough effort into the gameplan.
Well said.
