That is interesting. And when watching, I never connected that the music during the black screens was the same as when characters encountered the monoliths. That's pretty cool.
It doesn't change my stance that the monoliths seemed out of place, but I could definitely buy into the black screens being the audience staring directly at the surface of the monoliths.
