if this whole expansion thing is all about money, and it looks increasingly like it is, the SEC would be foolish to take miami, florida st, clemson, and ga tech. the SEC already has those state markets locked up. in other words, you bring nothing new to the table with 2 more florida schools, a georgia school, and a south carolina school.

a sure fire way to make money would be to offer mizzou if the big 10 doesn't take them, then also offer north carolina, uva, and maryland. in one fell swoop, you get st louis, charlotte, the research triangle, richmond, d.c., and baltimore. you'd probably even get some spillover into philadelphia because of maryland.

that would make any SEC tv deal worth its weight in gold.

You also get KC with Mizzou.

A&M gets you Dallas, I'm pretty sure.

if we could get a and m, i'd gladly give up maryland . ..i just think the texas legislature won't let them go to different conferences even if a and m looks like they kinda like the SEC's advances.

Mizzou would consider it because it means more money, but I don't think there's any way that NC, Virginia, or Maryland head to the SEC.

The latter three all have high academic standards and will complain about how much harder it is to recruit there than at other SEC schools.

In addition, NC's thing is basketball and their rivalry with Duke is pretty much their deal. The SEC would be a major step backwards for them on that front, as the ACC and the Big East are the two premiere basketball conferences right now.

Maryland is somewhat in the same boat, as they have a big basketball history as well, though not on par with UNC.

I agree. I said in an earlier thread that I think the SEC teams each got $17 million last year. So, if they added Miami, FSU, GT, and Clemson, they would have to generate an extra $68 million just to break even. I don't see any way that adding those 4 t.v. markets will generate that kind of cash. It just doesn't make sense to me. The only thing that makes sense really is expanding West or North. But I'm not sure the best move isn't just to do nothing.

agree with respect to clemson and ga tech - disagree with FSU and Miami - both generate enough national interest to be worth a lot

maybe, not sure they make more than other options

lso offer north carolina, uva, and maryland.

even if you could take NC without NC State and Duke (which I don't think you can) they are probably not that big of a revenue maker.

Va tech over Va if you take either and can take just one

Maryland is a possibility most overlook - a long shot but some logic

And anyway Texas, A&M, and OU are all bigger prizes than most or all of those options IMO

i think if uva, unc, and maryland knew the acc was going to get pillaged, and they could either join the raiding party and walk out with some loot, or they could sit back and watch the thing burn down around them, they might swallow their academic pride for a bit. football is extremely popular in all three states.
