Not saying we couldn't have used them, but you did ask why. Here is a guess. We (BP/joint command) already had people doing the job these guys ould have been doing. Sort of like 10 people can't change a tire faster than 9 or 8 or 7. Remember these guys had knowledge and weren't actually going to do the actual clean up work.

found another article, they have skimmers and equipment. No excuse.

"Four skimmers, recovery units that suck out the oil, 2,000 metres of onshore boom and 400 metres of offshore boom, as well as two helicopter spray pots to disperse chemicals, are waiting to be mobilised.

“We have been in direct touch with the US authorities, and have presented all our documents and passports to the US embassy. Now we are just hoping we will get the chance to learn and help in the clean up in one of history’s worst oil spills,” said Mr Buckingham."

If I had to guess, the request is probably sitting on some GS-11s desk in the State Department.

yeah, I figure they will make it here eventually from the sound of it, sooner would be better though even just to put their skimmers in action
