..is it basically overwhelming the leak by piling cement/mud on top of the opening? And why wasn't this tried first? Did the other attempts have a higher probability of working?

I think there is a video of all of the explanations in the stickied thread at the top.

Basically it sounds like alot of planning and engineering type of stuff had to do into this as well as repairs to the BOP/equipment to allow this to become a possible fix.

because BP was trying to stall to save money, destroy our environment, put an end to oil/gas prodcution in the US. They are able to get away with it because the entire federal governenment is in their back pocket.

yeah, they were trying to save the oil so they could sell it. Either that, or it took this long for the magic 8 ball to guide them on this path.

My question is why they didn't have all these things lined up from the get-go instead of waiting until each failed in succession.

Rex has never let complete ignorance of a subject stop him before. No sense hoping for that on this subject.

good question. i guess we can ask this also "DO WE, AT PRESENT TIME, HAVE A REMEDY FOR WHEN THE SUN (STAR) FINALLY BURNS OUT?"

if we don't, we better hurry up. it's in stage 4 of 5 right now.

My guess is it's similar to states like Tennessee struggling with snow storms. Tennessee might get a serious snow every couple of years. So it's not capable of dealing effectively with it because they can't afford to maintain a fleet of vehicles to deal with something that rarely happens.

I have an opinion on this but can't discuss it.

It is not a one at a time process, most of the attempts to stop the leak are being engineered in parallel and implimented as soon s they are ready. The contol POD for the BOP was removed shortly after the spill started , and has been reengineered for the top kill and was just reinstalled a couple of days ago. The top kill required cutting and modifying high pressure piping on the BOP on the ocean floor, that has taken days. It is not as simple as going down and turning a valve, which they tried around day two.
