This idea may be completely retarded but....

could they somehow snake a device down into the pipe/well (against the pressure of the oil spewing out)? Could they snake an explosive device down the pipe to a certain depth and explode it thus exploding the pipe sub-surface and it the sea floor would collapse to an extent sealing off the broken pipe?
How far is it from the sea floor to the chamber (?) that holds the oil?

13k ft and explosives will make it worse.

Ya think it would just blow a giant fricking whole in the sea floor/earth crust?

I've wondered why they couldn't put a bigger pipe over the one spewing, instead of inserting a smaller one in it.
I'm sure there's a good reason and I'm just ignorant on the reasons why.

maybe we are not the technically advanced after all.
with all the technology we think we have, from spaceships, genetics, nano technology, you would think we could figure out a way to plug a fricking hole 5k under water.

Even if it would work, there is no way to get it down hole.

You have to be shitting me?
How many of those were perfected in a month with the whole world breathing down the scientists' necks to hurry the frick up?

That "hole" might as well be on the moon. Yeah, it's just under 5,000 feet of water. Plug it up already!

I hear what you are saying, but my question is why havent we/they been working on this technology, BEFORE this happened.
I know thats hindsight but damn, just what does this spill response consortium do.
Ive been wondering why they dont put a shape charge at the back of the rams to FORCE those suckers closed.

still havent heard the reason why it would not work - blow the pipe up deep underground - why wouldnt it work? As long as you destroy a long enough section of the pipe and the earth obviously would fill up what use to be the hole area???
Just re-asking..
Also, not "thru" the pipe like the orginal poster said, but drill down "next" to the pipe and blow it up?

This is what you need to understand about this event: Given the redundancy in safety devices (IF PROPERLY INSTALLED PER PROCEDURES, which, in and of themselves are safety devices), the chances of all the things going wrong at the same time that would lead to this event was (and still is) somewhere in the order of 0.0000000000000000001% chance.
No one is going to spend millions of dollars to mitigate that miniscule a risk....not matter how devastating the consequences.
