The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries announced at 8 p.m. today the most far-reaching closure of state coastal waters in the more than four weeks since the British Petroleum/Deepwater Horizon rig began gushing oil into the Gulf of Mexico off Louisiana’s coast.
All the newly closed waters are “inside” waters and include closures of most of Barataria Bay, all of Caminada Bay north of Grand Isle, and most, if not all, of Terrebonne and Timbalier bays.
The closure order effectively shut down all fishing in the Grand Isle, Grand Terre, Four Bayous Pass, Red’s Pass, Lakes Pelto and Barre and all points in the Cocodrie area.
This came from a post on another board.

Looks like just a matter of time before Vermillion Bay gets whacked. Can't understand how it has stayed out of Breton Sound thus far. Talk about totally fricking up an entire summer of fishing. Even after the fish kills from the freezes in the 1980's we could fish for other species.

There is much more oil lurking beneath the surface and moving very slowly. We may dealing with no fishing zones for years to come.

Mud, I agree, especially since the government necessarily will be very cautious. I understand the concept of using the dispersants, but am really starting to question the wisdom, as it appears we might actually just be spreading the problem. The positive (if there are any) is that the smaller globs should biodegrade much faster. And make no mistake, natural attenuation is the only viable long-term cleanup option.

Scientists have warned about dispersants for years.
Dispersants can be used in small amounts and work really affectively because of the close proximity to the Mississippi River and all the bacteria on the sediment coming down. However with such a ridiculous amount of oil gushing for over a month, its creating even bigger problems that will haunt the Gulf Coast for years if not decades.

Yeah, I fished from laffite all the way to barataria pass at grand isle yesterday and there were boats everywhere.
Saw no oil until putting my boat on the trailer.
Solid line of brown oil all the way around and no it wasn't marina crud.

This map is a grim view of our fishing future. Interesting that the entire barrier chain off of Cocodrie is not shown as affected, but look how deep into the marsh it is.
