I believe Shell has some big training center there. Maybe it's setup such that it works well as a command center.

Other than that, I was wondering the same thing.

I have a question. Has there never been a rig that exploded and had leaked oil before? I am talking worldwide. Seems to me that this had to have happen before somewhere.

Not a floating rig like this one where the BOP is on the seafloor....at least to my knowledge.

There have been several fixed production platforms that have exploded, but there are downhole safety devices to shut the wells...in addition to other mechanisms by which one can stop flow from a well with a dry-tree.

This is the first subsea blowout, to my knowledge, and the first time a floating rig (MODU) had "exploded" and then sank.

Petrobras had a floating production platform explode and sink off the coast of Brazil several years back, but again...the wells were already completed if I recall, so they were set to fail closed.

ETA: Have probably been several Jack Up rigs that have exploded, but the BOP was on the surface and could thus be closed. IN addition, divers could directly access the BOP, as it wasn't in 5000' of water.

It would appear so.

That being said, we lucked out of earthquakes, blizzards, mudslides, terrorist attacks, and still being a part of France. Also, we have a minimal hippy population relative to most other places.

I'll take it.

Shell training center. They also house their remote hurricane operations center there. Good communications equipment and training rooms.
