Houston has a pretty good foundation...

Clyde Drexler
Elvin Hayes
Hakeen Olajuwon (owns Shaq)

just don't know enough about them to fill in the blanks

FWIW

Otis Birdsong
Don Chaney
Drexler
Hayes
Olajuwon

And Birdsong was no slouch:

quote:

During his All-American season in 1976-77, Birdsong was named Southwest Conference Player of the Year, after leading the Cougars to a 29-8 record and in the NIT’S championship game against St. Bonaventure. Birdsong scored 38 points and made 18 free throws against the Bonnies. He ranked fourth nationally and set an SWC scoring record with 30.3 points per game. These accomplishments resulted in Birdsong being named SWC player of the Decade.

Houston could pretty much beat anybody with that starting five. The program has been dormant for 20 years and its all-time team still looks better than the all-time teams of some of the more recognizable programs IMO

When they met in the finals HO was in his prime and Shaq was a rookie and they STILL had nearly identical numbers in the finals. Houston had a much much better team around HO.
