Is it possible that this simply Jacob manipulating Richard via Hurley?
We know that someone else (other than MIB) is taking the form of people on the island thanks to the little kid from the beginning of the season.

I have sort of wondered if all of Hurley's visions of the dead were really Jacob; Charlie, Ana Lucia, etc.
