Revisionist history. The next nine years after he was let go was better than the last nine years he was here.

LSU record:

1971-1979: 65-35-3 (65.2%)
1980-1988: 66-34-5 (65.2%)

Just to pick another arbitrary period (4 Years)

1976-1979: 30-16-1 (64.9%)
1980-1983: 22-21-2 (51.1%)

It was actually 67-35-3 from 1971-79, which is an identical winning percentage to 1980-88, but Mac's percentage is helped by after-the-fact forfeits by Mississippi State in games we lost on the field. His actual record on the field was 65-37-3 (.633).

And you also failed to note these other differences:

SEC championships:

1971-79: 0
1980-88: 2 (and got dicked out of another one in 1984)

Top 5 finishes:
1971-79: 0
1980-88: 1

Top 10 finishes:
1971-79: 2
1980-88: 2

Top 25 finishes:
1971-79: 3
1980-88: 6

Major Bowl appearances:

1971-79: 1
1980-88: 3

Anyone who thinks the last 9 years under Mac were as good as the next 9 after he was let go just doesn't want to know the truth. In any event, there was absolutely certainly no drop-off.

Yes, 1981 and 1983 sucked. And of course your time period conveniently excludes Mac's two worst seasons in 1974 and 1975 and stops right before our 5-year streak of good (for us back then) seasons from 1984-88.

The reason I selected 9 years was because that's how long we continued to have success in general before the bottom fell out in 1989. The suggestion that letting Mac go caused the bottom to fall out, but with a mysterious 10-year delayed reaction, is stupid. The problems happened because of who we hired in 1987, not who we let go in 1979.
