The ones I disagreed with:

2000: Crowe over Hanks

It takes some great acting to carry a movie that's 3 hours mainly about a dude living alone on an island. Crowe did nothing special in Gladiator. Hanks was very entertaining and made me LOVE watching a man build fires and talk to a ball for 2 1/2 hours. And the scene where he loses Wilson makes me tear up

2002: Brody over Day-Lewis

As usual, DDL was $$$ as Bill the Butcher while Adrien Brody was pretty good in his Polish-WWII part. GREAT acting > GOOD acting, hence Day Lewis > Brody.

Rourke (The Wrestler)- over penn- one of the biggest robberies I've ever seen.

I didn't think it was a robbery at all. It's harder to play the role of an ACTUAL person than it is to act as a made-up character. Any little mistake will show up when playing an actual person. Penn was perfect as Harvey Milk. Perfect. Rourke was good and he would have won in almost any other year, but not going against Penn's greatness as Harvey Milk.

I agree with Marciano about Penn.

Despite the obvious political and social overtones surrounding Penn winning the award, he DID do a better job.
