I'm going to start a new thread, the other LSU ND thread has gotten disorganized talking about the 1971 game, the 1970 game and the 79 LSU vs. USC game.

almost made a diving game saving int in the end zone just before ND's Scott Hemple kicked a fg for the only score of the game.

Actually, QB Joe Thiesmen was quoted after as saying the best pass he threw that day was right to Casanova in the end zone and "Tommy dropped the ball"! Did not see it but listened to the classic radio broadcast; good ole days?

Our seats were low in the endzone where that play happened. Wife had given me an early Christmas present, a new SLR camera, and although I didn't have a telephoto lens for it at that time, the action was close enough to get a decent picture. I just happened to pick that play to shoot. Gatewood was open and Casanova was trying to recover - Theisman's pass was off, and hit Casanova in the numbers.

History would be different today if he makes the pick. the only regular season loss that year would have been Texas A&M on opening day...by 2 points. the Tigers beat Bama (in Birmingham) and Auburn (in Auburn) that year. Question is would LSU have played in a different bowl game for the MNC? LSU lost to Nebraska in the Orange Bowl 17-12, who won at least a share of the NC as a result.

Thanks for that.

BTW...ND had Capital One Bowl turf.
Was it wet that day?

That is an awesome picture. I was 5 years old at the time. This was the season I started following LSU. My older brother was a huge Casanova fan and used to draw 37s on white T-shirts.

My parents went to this game, and they still say it really sticks in their mind like very few other games.

Whatever pictures you can show us would be fantastic - these are really quite a find.
