Did the ending surprise you?
Did you think he was going to end up being Teddy or Andrew?

Just got back from seeing this and it totally met my expectations. I had nothing to go on going into the movie other than the previews because I wanted to go in fresh.
I figured out during the scene early in the movie when they are interviewing the one patient and the lady asks for a glass of water and writes RUN in Teddy's book that Chuck was actually the doctor.
I couldn't figure out if Leo was actually a patient or not. I was actually expecting the double twist at the end where you find out he was really Teddy all along and they duped him into thinking he was crazy or they would leave you guessing as to who he really was.
I was wrong on both counts. I thought the ending was actually pretty good.
The movie kept me on edgge the whole time and I love the style it was shot in. Clearly an homage to Al Hitchcck movies. I loved it.

Me too...I liked how they did it though.
Oh yeah, I loved the movie all together. The music in the beginning when they're driving up to the institution is epic. DiCaprio deserves a best actor nod and despite being a Feb. release looks like he may get one - LINK

No. I knew when he had the note that there were 67 patients in the prison, but only 66 patients accounted for.
It gave it away for me that he was the 67th patient. I had a feeling he was this patient before I even saw the movie.
My brother is at the movies now watchin the movie, and he told me he thought Teddy is actually the "patient" earlier today
Was a good movie though.

Almost forgot about that music. Very nice touch. Added to the creepiness of the island.

how did you know there were 66 patients accounted for? they didn't mention it until later in the movie.
Regardless, this movie isn't about the "twist" (you have to expect things are not as they seem in movies like this) so much as it is about a certain type of film genre and in my opinion Scorceses nailed it.
As far as Leo goes, I thought I was watching Jimmy Stewart all over again.

Someone told me there was a big twist but I was guessing from the previews that I had seen, the twist was that the criminally insane patients had taken over the island posing as doctors, orderlys, wardens, island police, etc.

I left wondering if a severe psychological trauma like finding your wife had drown your three kids and then you killing the wife would actually cause such pyschosis and delusions.

it is my understanding that when he said... "is it better to die a good man than to live as a monster" or whatever.... that he was aware of who he was and what he had done, but chose to have the lobotomy. is this what we are meant to think?

you're neglecting the fact that he blamed himself for being an alcoholic and ignoring her mental problems instead of getting her the help she needed.

you mean you think the movie was saying he was actually cured at the end but pretending to not be cured so he could just live out his days on the island and not face the real world as Andrew Laedis?
I'm not sure about that. I think the movie implied that he was taken for the labotomy at the end.

Ok. Best way I can explain it is this. He was in the meeting with doctors and said there are 67 patients. Where is the other patient?
Well me hypothesizing that there would be a twist, i had a feeling he was actually the patient.
This movie never had me on the edge of my seat in suspense like i was watching Silence of the Lambs. I mean the acting was superb. Dicaprio, kingsley, etc. bring it every role.
Like I said, i'm not sayin the movie is bad. It was good. I would go watch it again just for the acting alone. Different strokes i guess.

yeah, I think when they stated in the movie that there was 66 patients and one unaccounted for that most everyone thought it was possible it could be him.

THat's what I thought bc they had warned him in the scene in the lighthouse he would have a lebotomy if he didn't realize who he really was.
Then in the next scene they tell him he's regressed before and they won't go through that exercise again.

If I'm not mistaken that was also stated in the previews about the number of patients. That's why i had the idea in my head before i watched the opening credits.

do you think they actually did labotomys there or were using it to try to shake him into reality?
At the end of the movie were they taking him to do the whole exercise--role play again or where they taking him to get the labotomy?

interesting. Not sure if the book actually explains that or not.
The way the movie left it you could interpret it a couple of different ways

I think they were tryin to shake him into reality.
I thought they were takin him to do the lebotomy. I thought the orderly was holding some surgical equipment rolled up into a towel. At least that's what it looked like to me.
