Why the frick is the NFL licensing and selling shirts that say "NFC Conference Champions" (same for AFC too). Uh..., McFly, anybody home up there?

And this is not the only one.

That how many of the AFC and NFC gear are. Someone tried to sell me the exact same shirt outside the Dome right after the game. I picked up on it right away and said No thanks man. I told myself it was a bogus shirt. Oh well.

You can read it two ways.

But, the intended reading is such:

Understanding that the "C" of "NFC" stands for "conference". And that the Saints won the NFC. And that the NFC is a conference. Therefore it stands to reason that the Saints are the NFC Conference champions.

It's not the same thing at all.

Carface is technically correct.

NFC, in that context, is used as an adjective - it clarifies which conference. Since it is an adjective, the redundancy is appropriate.

Simply saying NFC champions is also correct, as NFC would, again, be used as an adjective (clarifies what type of champions the Saints are).

Since some people will read NFC as a noun, you might as well go with NFC Champions to avoid the confusion. But both versions are correct.

This

I don't see it as a big deal either, but the shirt is too generic. Looks like a wal-mart t-shirt.

They're champions of the National Football Conference. All else is redundant

It's grammatically correct.

Both the Saints and the Colts are conference champions. The shirt identifies that the Saints are conference champions of the National Football Conference (which is an entity and therefore a proper noun) and not the American Football Conference (again, an entity and proper noun). I know it seems redundant and confusing to say "NFC Conference Champions", but technically speaking, it's okay. It identifies that the Saints (the who) are the conference champions of the NFC (the what) and not the AFC.

Technically, so were the Cowboys, Vikings, and Cardinals.
