Gonzales came to coach Shepard?

I didn't post this, but a couple of weeks ago on a local radio station here in B'ham, a Baton Rouge radio guy was being interviewed on the Round Table and said that Gonzales came here to coach RS to be a similar type player of Percy Harvin- a WR with quick speed, difficult to tackle in an open field.
I don't know about you, but I still believe RS has a future as a college QB. I know this has been probably posted a gillion times on here, but when I heard that on the radio here in Birmingham it just really pissed me off. I seriously hope RS gets the starting job next year.
Anyone else in B'ham here this?

Not so sure about that:

Miles also said sophomore Russell Shepard will work at wide receiver and running back in hopes of developing him into a "Percy Harvin-type" player in reference to the former Florida standout, who played the hybrid position in 2008. Harvin, who now plays for the Minnesota Vikings, recently was chosen NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year

Yeah, if Shepard ends up playing like Harvin I am going to be one pissed off SOB.

What in the world have you seen that would make you think this ?

You think RS was told that when he was being recruited? Doubtful.

What's your point?
You have no clue as to the conversations that the coaching staff and Shep have had.
Did you not read that he worked as a QB last Spring which was one of the reasons that he was not as effective in the role that he wound up in this year?
Also, how do you know that Shep isn't okay with that move?
Shep might fricking LOVE the idea of being the next Harvin.
Oh and before I get the "he was the #1 QB coming out last year" first tell me how Gino Toretta, Charlie Ward, Danny Wuerffel, Chris Weinke, Eric Crouch, Jason White have done in the NFL.

And, who is to blame for this?

You contradict yourself.
Of course he was going to get work LAST Spring as a QB.
When he couldn't beat out JJ or Lee, maybe even Garrett, they wanted to find another role for him. That obviously takes time.
I wish he would've gotten more touches late in the season, but I'm sure we will see much more of him next season.
I hope...

I can understand him not being the starter as a true freshman, but you honestly would be happy if he never threw one single pass as a QB at LSU when he was the #1 recruit ?

He was the #1 recruit for his legs not his arm.

It isn't easy, but there are much more LSU fans than I thought up here.

PLENTY of players change positions when they hit college

Why are you stuck on that?
Okay, so he was the #1 recruit...but, if he's better suited to fill another position with the team, and plays excellent in that role, then who cares?

I agree with this. Not that I am stuck on him being QB, but if he does develop into the next Percy Harvin, heck I'll be happy. But when it all boils down at the end of the day, I'm still disappointed because of the importance of the QB position, and if we never see him at least get a shot at being a QB in his career at LSU, yes I'll be upset.

Someone tell me how becoming Percy Harvin is a bad thing... dude had a good college career, 2 national championships and is on a playoff contender in his first year
It may not have been Plan A for Shep, but it's not a horrible Plan B by any stretch.
ETA: Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't he the #1 Athlete NOT the #1 Quarterback last year.

I can guarantee you this, JJ is a better all around QB than Shep and that will not change for as long as Jefferson is here.

Lets look at things we know
1. Shep is very unselfish and team player
2. He came to LSU as a QB and knew a hybrid role was possible.
3. We had a young QB already with lots of promise.
Im sure he and Miles have talked and he knows that his best shot to the pros is at wr. How many run first qbs have we seen in the NFL? V Young has a good game now and then, but none really. Shep doesnt have a Vick arm to work with. Not NFL strength. He does have a ton of speed and moves. Plus Harvin gettin ROY prolly made this even easier, not to mention bringing in the coach that got Harvin to this point. The staff may not have given him a completely fair shake at QB, but from an unbiased standpoint it was for his own good. It seems Les is pulling out all the stops to make RS as successful as he told him he would.
sorry so long

We did. Last Spring.
Again, if Shep has a Harvin like season next year it would be foolish to then take him out of that role just to see if he can once again beat out a QB that has more experience than he does with the system.
Also, I think he would want to stay in that role if he has that much success. Especially since the NFL would no doubt be interested.
