post.

Given the current attitude of a lot of LSU fans, how long would Joe Pa have survived as LSU head coach?

Not long.

But CFB has changed immensely since Joe Pa's early years. Not only idiots on internet message boards, but the amount of money involved has escalated to the point that the dynamics of college programs then and now don't compare.

Depends on if Joe Pa was making the same salary as Miles. Seeing as the guy has been at PSU for over 40 years and still only makes around $1 million each year compared to Miles $3.75 million. Big, BIG difference.

Had Joe Pa built LSU the way he built Penn State obviously feelings would be different.

Would he have been given the time?

Your topic is honestly pretty stupid. You're comparing a man that built an entire program from the ground up to a man that took a juggernaut and underachieved all but one or two years in his 5 here at LSU. On top of that he's being paid almost 4 times what Joe Pa is, making it again a horrible comparison.

Maybe the bowl selection committee is dropping us hints at keeping things in perspective?

Thank you for your in depth analysis.

Was the PSU program in ruins when Joe Pa took over?
Did Rip Engle run it into the ground?
If so how did he make the Hall of Fame?

Do you know that Joe Pa has turned down raises?
You seem to be so well informed. I'm sure you did.

Gray, LSUMafia still thinks our AD is our former NC winning baseball coach so I would take all of his posts with a huge chunk of salt.

Given the thought process of 90% of the people posting in TD, Coach Paterno would not have lasted very long. I would estimate that of those 90%, about 99% of them would have wanted him fired after going undefeated and not being awarded the NC by President Nixon.

90% of the posters in TD thrive on rumor and although they would not admit it, would love nothing more for LSU to have a losing record next year so they could listen for the gossip and speculation of the next LSU coach.

Still spreading lies genuineLSUtiger? I guess so. You love to misinform people on my statements.

Furthermore GrayTiger, he did build a program. He's been there 40 years and averaged nearly 9 wins a year for that duration.

Fact is this isn't the mid 1960's when Joe Pa started at PSU. If Miles had started at LSU 44 years ago, I'd say most people would be happy with his overall results. Hell, just 5 years ago, PSU fans were calling for Joe Pa's head, but his track record of nearly 40 years (not 3 years) spoke for itself.

Les gets a lot of undeserved crap, but he also gets some deserved criticism.

By the way, I stated in the past that Bertman screwed us by the contract he gave Miles in 2007, and stated it as something along the lines of "Thanks to our AD's genius contract for Miles, we won't be getting rid of Miles". Anyone with common sense knew I was speaking of Bertman as a past tense, yet idiots like Genuinelsutiger like falsely go around accusing me of not knowing who our AD is.

You need to define your view of building a program and sustaining it.
One builds something where there was nothing before. Did or did not PSU have a great program under Rip?
If so then Joe just sustained it. Not an easy chore, but it blasts holes in your logic.

The fact that Joe has been at PSU so long brings me back to my original question. Would the LSU fans, like you for instance, have given him the time and support to be at LSU 40+ years? Or would you be wanting his head after the first down season or two?

Would you be willing to have him 40 years with Joe's overall record?

What sort of a contract would YOU have given Miles at that point? A two year deal predicated on going to the SECCG both years or out on his duff?
Maybe a specific average margin of victory clause?
What about a clause determining the average of points scored?
Or better yet, what mix of run/pass would be acceptable?

It's also about people. As a proud Pennsylvanian, people up there tend to be older, Catholic, from Eastern Europe, and they value loyalty. Especially back in the 50's and 60's, when everyone was much more isolated than now. State College is still 90 minutes from the nearest airport. There is a Farm for gosh sake, right next to a 108,000 capacity stadium. I saw the corn field for my last game in 2006. If Joepa was at LSU that long and had success and not PSU, then he would still be there.

The answer is no, we ran our version of Jo Pa (Charlie Mac) out on a rail.

IMO Joe Pa should have been let go years ago.

Seriously...what has Penn State done in terms of competing for titles since 1994?

That year they got denied a chance to play Nebraska for the title. I haven't really considered Penn State a true contender since then.

In the late 90's we were #1 for most of the year a couple of times (including that team in 99 that was upset by a 30 pt dog in Minnesota.) I still have the SI covers (thanks a lot SI.)

2000-2004 was really a low point for us historically. 2005 we were #3 (couldn't jump Texas or USC anyways even if we beat Michigan IMO.)

He'll never be let go. He's resurrected this program plenty (and we've had 7 unbeaten seasons and only 2 national championships...IMO NO ONE has been screwed more than we have in the history of college football.)

How'd that work out? Yeah...you didn't win.

Precisely. So you haven't been in the mix for at least a decade. Joe Pa can keep you at the top of the second tier, but if Penn State wants to win another title, they should find another coach.
