Miles versus DiNardo

I hear a lot of hate on Miles, and I am no fan of his by any margin, but its interesting that some people actually brought up DiNardo as a comparison when describing him.
One thing that I'll give Miles credit for was that when he realized the mistake he made on the defensive side of the ball (co-DCs and Earl Lane), he made the call to have them replaced, albeit quietly.
DiNardo refused to get rid of Tepper and it ended up sealing his fate. Our defense collapsed under his leadership, and DiNardo put friendship before his team. Once Watts left after 1998 and we had no offense, he made his second mistake, but the damage was done.
This season Miles again is in a tough position and needs to prove himself to be willing to put his team before friendship. He likely needs to get rid of Crowton, Studs, and it looks like McCarthy is all but gone for something fishy going on.
If he can prove again he's looking out for the program, than he may have a chance to regain many of the fans he's lost.

I agree. If he gets a new OC and next year the O comes out and lights it up all may be forgotten. But I have had my doubts since he lost to Tenn. with a 21 point lead at half time. Add in the poor decpline and the bad clock management and i just dont think he is cut out for the SEC.

Yeah, my only beef with Miles is that he looks like he took a lot of trouble makers in 2005 and 2006 when he didn't have too.
People kept giving him a pass on the OL play because Saban "left that cupboard empty" but instead of doing a better job recruiting in 2006, he just started moving defensive players over there, and the only thing that did was kill our DL depth.
Given he was planning to move Barksdale from DT to OL from the beginning (eventhough he told him he'd get his shot at DT), they should've picked up other DT prospects in that time.
Miles is also losing fans because the positions he's supposed to be a guru at is likely the worst unit on the team, or maybe its the DL, but imagine if a guy like Hitt was still on the DL and giving us that option to at least help out.

He lost me when he was hired. Not his fault, I never really liked the hire. He was brought in to be a CEO when we needed a coach. I am always a proponent of having your head coach be a real coach and not figurehead/time manager given the limit on the number of assistants you get.
Miles didn't fit that at all, and its sadly shown. He's done well given the circumstances, but there was no reason LSU shouldn't have been 11-0 going into the SEC CG in 2005 and 2007 given the talent and the ways we lost our games those years.

Losing football games is a valid reason.

They're both average coaches that seem to be ok with putting mediocore teams on the field.

Miles will always look better than DiNardo, because he had Saban's talent to start with, so he could win because Saban's player could overcome bad coaching. Now, with his players, Milesw can't win because they are not smart enough to overcome bad coaching. Miles players are dumber and less talented than Saban's players.

DiNardo didn't put keep or hire anyone out of friendship. He kept people because he was stubborn and didn't want everyone else's opinion to count more than his. He flatly admitted this in his restaurant interview right after he was fired.

The day DiNardo opened his restaurant was the beginning of the end for him...He won a few, thought he had this LSU football thing figured out, thought he'd be around BR for a long time...how quickly things turned around on him.

Of course you conveniently forget that Saban won with DiNardo's tlent.

He's right though. DiNardo had the least talent coming in and Saban had more, but much less than Miles. The fact is that Miles made the change last year despite having the NC the year before in his pocket to use.
That can be looked at two ways. Either he's too easily swayed by public opinion or he realized his job wasn't secured by just winning an NC. I tend to hope its the latter.

Miles is only slightly better than Dinardo, but we'll never know.
