McElroy attended high school at Carroll Senior High School in Southlake, Texas, playing under head coach Todd Dodge. During his sophomore and junior seasons, McElroy played behind Chase Daniel,[1] who later was in contention for the Heisman Trophy while playing for the Missouri Tigers.

In his first season as a starter in 2005, McElroy passed for 4,636 yards, 56 touchdowns, and nine interceptions[1] en route to a 16–0 season, which included the Texas 5A state championship.[2][3] For his efforts as a senior, McElroy was named the Texas 5A Player of the Year[4] and an EA Sports All-American.[5]

McElroy's 56 touchdown passes ranks first all-time in the Texas 5A classification,[3] and second all-time in Texas high school football history, only behind Graham Harrell's 67 touchdowns in 2003.[6] His 4,646 yards passing currently ranks fifth all-time in Texas.[6]

This game is JJ's worst nightmare, don't bet on it. LSU will have to win despite the QB play in this game.

OK, you may be right. BUT, he is only one man on a team. bama's offensive threat begins with their running game and that is fact. mcelroy is the kind of qb that won't cost you a game and the other parts of the team, assisted by him will win a game; that is their defense, their special teams and their running game supplemented by his passing game. he doesn't fumble a lot and he doesn't throw a lot of interceptions. that formula works for them. lsu is actually a lot like that. we have a better passing game and that could win the game for us IF we can give JJ time to throw and IF our D plays a great game. the key to me and was appearant in the florida game is that we have to make first downs and we have to give JJ time to throw the ball. if we can do that, we win; if not, the only way we win is like 3-0 or our defense and special teams scoring.
