The year you are referring to was when Dinardo first got here and the home team had to get the visiting team's approval if the home team wanted to wear white. Later in the 90s (don't remember what year) the rule was changed so that the home team decides and doesn't need permission.

I thought the home team had to wear the dark jersey and the visiting team wore the white. LSU was the only team with an exemption and could wear white at home if approved by visiting team.

Seems Bama denied Tenn's request this week to wear orange jersey's this weekend in TTown.

This...LSU usually wears white for first home game of year. OSU forced us to wear purple.

Technically you can wear whatever the hell you want, but you would have to give up a timeout if you break the jersey rules.

The NCAA rule says home teams wear dark and must get permission from the visiting team to change that..

The SEC has a rule that trumps that allowing the home team to decide during SEC games only..

that the NCAA rule that changed the outdated rule.. TVs arent black and white anymore, so no need to have that rule..

but the SEC has a separate rule.. this has been covered countless times on here..

The SEC later adopted a league rule stipulating that the home team has sole discretion in determining its jersey color. Nick Saban became LSU’s head coach in 2000 and continued the white jersey tradition, but with a twist. Saban decided that LSU would wear purple jerseys for all non-SEC games, except the home opener, a trend that current LSU coach Les Miles has continued.
