Bring the Heat

Plenty of talk about our abysmal offense, but I'd like to see us bring more heat on defense to change the pace of the game, field position, create some turnovers, etc. I know the defense has played well, but we're not helping our offense by allowing opponents to stay on the field with sustained drives, even if we keep them from scoring. We need to give our offense every advantage we can and I think the way to do that is blitz now and often.
Now, I know we only have 1 really legit lockdown corner, but I think the combination of Hawk, Jai and even Ron Brooks on the other corner can give us the confidence to introduce more blitz packages. Personally, I think Brandon Taylor is the perfect DB to bring on the blitz because he is the best open field tackler we have. Coleman ought to be the guy we bring from the LB spot.
I know this is not vintage Chavis but we've got to give the offense as much help as we can and I say its time to take some chances on defense and bring more heat.

Has he played anything other than special teams?

This is not the philosophy of our DC.

We blitzed alot more in the UW game than we have recently.

We all know that. I'm just saying if Miles is really in charge, he tells Chavis we need more than what we've seen so far because we need to help the offense. We are a TEAM, aren't we?

Chavis has never been a big blitz guy. I know we got spoiled with an aggressive defensive style this decade, but those days are gone.

That's like hiring Crowton and forcing him to run an offense he isn't comfortable with.
Oh wait...

We havent been a big blitz team since Miles got here. Hes been through 3/4 D Co-ords. I think its pretty clear who doesnt want to blitz.

Don't worry...Bama will show us the proper way to blitz a quarterback.

Should we continue to blitz, if our rushers keep getting picked up at the LOS and give the QB plenty of time with less guys in coverage?

I get it -- we haven't done much of this in the past 4-5 years. I say "frick the past" and do what you need to do TODAY!
That's like saying we need a pooch kick a punt at some point in the game to keep it away from a dangerous return guy but our punter has a great average, so we let him boom one. YOU DO WHAT YOU NEED TO DO TO WIN.

Why would you hire someone with that much experience and ask him to change?
That hasn't worked with Crowton and it won't work with Chavis.

True, Miles could not even get Malletoe to change the D last season (if he even tried at all) and they didnt even belong on the sidelines in the SEC. Chavis has what, 20 years of SEC D-coord. experience? You think Miles will buck the chief, when he wouldn't even buck the co-clowns?
Miles is gonna let his coords do thier thing the whole season and then make changes after the season is over, if he deems it appropriate. Even if it means wasting an entire year of LSU football: See 2008.

I refuse to believe that you don't adept to needs as the season unfolds, no matter who you hire. "Bend but don't break" will not be a sustainable defensive scheme the rest of the season given how our offense has played. I think you need to assume that the OL will not get substantially better, JJ will not dramatically mature and we'll continue to struggle scoring. "Bend but don't break" is just going to keep the game close and it will burn us given our current offensive personality.
