I think that the problems run blocking are more due to play calling than the linemen. When everyone knows it's a run play (which was Hebert's and my point), the defense has too many people at the point of attack for the linemren to block.

Lots of teams are still able to run the ball without a good passing attack. In fact, most teams in college football don't have a good passing game. You STILL should be able to run the ball against the likes of Vandy and MSU and ULL without a passing game...even if they put more in the box. You zone block and then the RB needs to break through the first tackler and then he has no one else left since they put 8 in the line to begin with. You see a lot of big gainers on 3rd and 1 from the 40 or so by teams.

I think that the coaches wanted smaller guards to run the spread offense. We are getting pushed around in the trenches, we are not getting the push inside like we did in years past. We had big physical guards, the coaches took a gamble with this experiment and it's backfiring.
