Look at the scenario below and put Charles Scott in the shoes of LeGarrette Blount. What should THE HAT do if Scott had sucker punched an opponent?

It will be very interesting to watch the fate of Oregon running back LeGarrette Blount. He is listed as the starter and is a senior. After a sorry day during the game (8 rushes for -5 yards) he was even sorrier by sucker punching a Boise State player.

Lesser players would surely be kicked off most teams, but as a starter what will he recieve? Will he get a 3 game suspension? And what message does that send to these young guys?

What would THE HAT do in this situation?

I think the punch itself showed he lost control in the moment, but then when he was fighting his fellow players and then tried going after the fans while a coach and a policeman where trying to hold him back. Look at the Oregon player walking up the tunnel when they finally got him in the tunnel was just looking at him. I think he should be kicked off the team, not for the punch itself but for his actions after the punch.

i believe there are ways to punish a player without suspending him. ALthough in this situation i think a suspension could be necesary. I'm not excusing the guy for the punch but the Boise State player is just as much at fault in my opinion. I believe his fate now lies in the hands of the NCAA

I doubt many players (good or otherwise) would be kicked off the team if this were the only incident in their history. If a player has any kind of history of misconduct and THEN pulls something like this, then it is VERY likely they would be kicked off (starter or not). But if this was the only mistake I think a suspension of 3 games or so would fit the bill.

I personally don't believe Blount will or should be kicked off the team unless he has already screwed up (even a little bit) before. I think he should be suspended and put on essentially a zero-tolerance status, where any more mistakes mean he's gone.

My view is that players deserve a few minor mistakes (coaches' discretion on how many or how bad) OR one big one (with limits). This is a big one, so he has used up all his slack/chances/forgiveness/etc.

As a side note, I find it nauseating that this is being described as equal to the behaviour of the Miami players in that brawl a couple of years ago. Imo, that was far, FAR beyond throwing a single punch, pushing some guys and yelling at some fans (especially considering Miami WON that game, so had no reason to be frustrated in the first place).

If this is the case, then he should be gone, period. You can't be a troublemaker and still expect a second chance for something this big.

If we lose to Alabama, and some wise-arse Bama D-end comes up to Chuck Scott and grabs him by the jersey and laughs in his face, I hope Scott drops him. If one of our players were to do that they would be celebrated for years to come. Look at how we reacted after our guys floored half of Miami's team.

Not quite, imo. I agree the Boise player should be getting more criticism for his behaviour than he is (I've only heard one person so far even comment on his conduct), but Blount's response was still more egregious than the Boise guy's initial dig. They are both at fault, but I think Blount is significantly more at fault.

Big difference: we won that game. When you get into a fight after getting your arse kicked on the field, then you're just a thug and a punk, regardless of whether you win the fight.

If you are gonna talk trash, you shouldn't be surprised when someone eventually pops you in the mouth for it.

If you are idiot enough to throw the punch, you deserve to be severely disciplined. Blount is an idiot.
