Another crafty Les Miles move designed to get Loston a medical redshirt, just in case the clearinghouse doesn't come through? Would there be any advantage to this? Wouldn't this get Loston an extra year w/o having to use a redshirt? If he's going to play anyway because of talent, would the redshirt even be necessary?

Miles may think two chess moves ahead of everyone else. Discuss.

On Monday, Loston practiced with bare hands, showing no ill effects of any injury. As the day wore on, other LSU players said he spent more time standing with coaches and watching than participating.

No, I don't think so, but thinking maybe he was setting it up so that it would seem natural, when Loston was finally cleared if it was too late, for example.

Kind of like how he was talking about JJ's "injury" last year and the fact that they were going to medical redshirt him, then Hatch gets hurt and the next thing we know the guy is our starting QB.

a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush

smart move by miles IMO

just like in politics, in you repeat a lie over and over, sooner or later, people are going to start believing it.

he was preparing to give out a redshirt, if he had to.

I don't know how you can say that,Miles said he didn't know about it in one interview, and down-played it in another. Many posts about Miles is covering it up and his "coach-speak" with injuries(how he always down-plays them). Your strategy may be right(I doubt it),and I think a post-season application for a Med-red would be a total waist with Loston(a three year player).Nice use of preseason energy though.

if so, do you think posting about it on a message board is a good idea ?

Yes, since he's already been cleared.

Loston himself talked about the injury to TSD. Miles (as he is wont to do) never acknowledged it.

I don't think Miles was thinking that far ahead.

If he didn't get thru the Clearinghouse, he wouldn't be on the team, he wouldn't have a scholarship, and redshirting would be irrelevant. If he does have an injury, he could play early and if things didn't work out, he could then get a medical redshirt if he got the surgery. However, I don't see any advantage by concealing it. You have 5 years to play 4, so it doesn't get you an extra year, but if he gets the medical redshirt this year and he is unfortunate to be badly injured in the future, it may set him up for a possible extra hardship year.

Yes, but my point was that he did clear the clearinghouse, albeit too late to participate in practice and not play this year. Buying him an extra 'phantom' year.

Probably this, although I'm not sure if the injury is really an "injury".

This...see Charles Alexander and Kirston Pittman.

My point is that there really isn't a phantom year.

The redshirting rules state that if you play 1 down, you can't redshirt. However, I acknowledge that many freshmen seem to get some mysterious injury that qualify them for a medical redshirt that upper classmen wouldn't get. These type of decisions have to be made fairly early and after limited playing time. But hardship waivers (i.e. the granting of a 6th year) are scrutinized. Athletes don't get these unless they miss 2 years due to real injuries like Alexander and Pittman. I think Loston would have to have surgery to qualify for this. The vicious hangnail probably isn't enough.
