Question for the TD.com financial gurus...

I'm a first time college investor. I was reading Forbes the other day and they really seemed to like these stocks. I did my research and I like them as well. Both are in my price range and both seem to be in solid/rebounding industries. Littlefuse makes the circuits and electrical components of a variety of products, from iPods and iPhones to the electrical wiring in cars. Compass Diversified Holdings is what forbes called a "mini berkshire", buying large stakes in small companies.

Im leaning towards littlefuse, anyone have any suggestions either way?

I'll hang up and listen.

Can't find anything about Littlefuse, what is its symbol?

Compass' chart looks OK I guess, but I don't know how much growth a companyh like that is going to have. If I remember correctly, you want to only invest a couple hundred dollars?

Do yourself a favor and save up at least a thousand dollar before you invest in any stocks, because you are going to want more than just one stock. Diversity on cheap, undervalued stocks (maybe buy some Ford). Is this for your 401(K) or are you just trying to invest in the short term. Either way, don't put all your eggs in one basket.

I've never heard of either company but that is not surprising. I've not heard of a LOT of smaller companies so no harm there.

I would only advise you to research, not only the financials and the products of the two companies, but also find out all you can about the PEOPLE running those companies. You're not just buying into a company which makes products. You are buying the senior management as well. And in smaller companies, the people is often more important than the products.

Find out: What is their expertise in their business? What have they done over the last 5-10 years? What happens to the company if the "mover/shaker" gets hit by the proverbial beer truck? Is one person so critical (ala, Steve Jobs with Apple in the 1990's) that if he leaves or gets sick, the company is leaderless? Who sits on those companys' boards? Are the boards incestuous?

Good luck!
