LSU needs to rebuild its D-line

Excellent article by Mike Detillier:
D-Line
Agree with him this is our biggest question mark this year. But I was shocked that he said our LBs are as good as any team's in the country and will be the strength of the D. Thoughts?

I would say exactly opposite. but, that's just me.

agree. on Rivals - Perry Riley was voted the most "Over rated" defensive player.
PLUS - Detillier is a HACK!!! He wanted 9and predicted) his BOY (Orgeron) to come here as most of you know. The guys has NEVER done anything but run his big mouth about the Saints and thinks he is an EXPERT. I know his family and some will tell you the same thing about him.

by the fat asses who cover recruiting? I dont think our LBs are that good but damn, nobody at Rivals knows anything about actual football.

Agree about that here's the article
"MOST OVERRATED PLAYER: LSU LB Perry Riley. Riley was one of 12 finalists for the Butkus Award last season, given annually to the nation's best linebacker. Riley might have been one of the top 12 linebackers in the SEC last season. But one of the 12 best in the nation? No way. He finished the season with 60 tackles, third-best on the team, and didn't do much in the Tigers' five losses, coming up with 22 combined stops in those games. And for those who want to talk about LSU's talent at linebacker, consider that the Tigers haven't had a linebacker drafted since Bradie James in 2003 - and he's the only one since 1989."

how the hell did he finish as a finalist for that anyway? Must have a relative on the committee.

don't ask. I have NO IDEA. with as bad of a D-line we had last year, it would make sense for him to have had more tackles last year, don't you think?

Think coaching (co-DCs) might have something to do with Riley's year?
I do think he's our best LB, and will do much better with Chavis running the D. But I also think it's a reach to say LB is the strength of the LSU D, or that our LBs are as good as any team in the country. Would love for it to be true...but I just don't see it.

this says it all
we just don't recruit well there ..Ali was a great undersized college LB, and Darry showed flashes of brilliance as a Soph - then progressively got worse when he ran through some injuries
I cannot think of the last recruiting where I said: man, I feel good about our MLB class

didn't Shepp finish a finalist for it too? maybe not, but it's still

we emphasized D-Line adn Corners so much as Saban LOVED to Blitz. We had a lot of coverage sacks, and bull rush QB pressures. He then turned it into a ground game where average LB's could look good. All they had to do was tackle.

i dont really know what to make about either Georgia boy really. They're both big and can run well, but sometimes they look good and sometimes they looked like shite. We'll know for sure now that they actually have a LB coach/DC that is not a retard.

I just think the state doesn't produce them ..those guys who have that size and frame and can run turn out to be Charles Scotts and Jacob Hesters, etc
in the regions we can easily recruit, there is no doubt about it that finding quality LBs with the right size is the single hardest thing to find ...just look at our recruiting the last 10 years ..we struggle finding them like Wisconsin struggles finding fast playmakers

You are correct. that is one reason why I like Coleman going to LB. I also think Chad Jones could play LB in the pro's. Everyone wants to be the next Sean Taylor or Ronnie Lott, he could be the next Lawrence Taylor (6'3", 237lbs) IMO. He could add another 5-10 pounds and still be very fast. At 6'3 240, great instincts, he could be a very good outside LB.

personally, I think Jones may have been converted to LB too if not to protect his pro career ..because he's clearly a S in the pros

He could be a "hybrid" like in a Dick LeBeau defense ala Troy Polamalu.

yes
but Polamalu is a S when it comes down to it
Chad's size, range and ball skills make him the prospect he is because he is so versatile

do you know how close this was to happening?

As a Steelers fan, I would LOVE to see him in that D. Not sure if that could happen given where he will get drafted. Hell, he might go and play baseball...
