TCM Thursday 7 PM

In A Lonely Place

A potentially violent screenwriter is a murder suspect until his female neighbor clears him. But she begins to have doubts...

Moody, complex, superbly made noir that may be Bogart's most fascinating role (although IMHO it could have used a hotter leading lady). Directed by Nicholas Ray (Rebel Without A Cause)

I watched it on TCM last month, plus I own it.

That's blasphemy! Gloria Grahame is awesome! She was also married to Nicholas Ray. Later she went on to marry his son and had kids by both men. Which was pretty damn scandalous in the 50s.

She may have not been the hottest but Gloria was a damn fine actress who's criminally underrated IMO. She just oozed attitude.

So? Neither is Stanwyck but does that stop you from enjoying Double Indemnity?

Looks like they got Gloria in The Big Heat right after In A Lonely Place, a great Fritz Lang noir. Cast include Glenn Ford and a young Lee Marvin.

I thought she looked her best in The Strange Love of Martha Ivers.

You need to watch her pre-codes where she plays the poor girl who fricks her way to the top

Me too -- I've even seen Dead Pigeon on Beethoven Street!

I haven't seen House Of Bamboo yet. It was scheduled on TCM a few weeks ago but for some reason wasn't shown :-(

Have you seen the documentary Fuller made in the '90s? In the '50s he was going to make a movie with John Wayne in South America and went down there to scout locations, then the studio cancelled the project. 40 years later Fuller went back to South America to those same locations.

I can't recall the documentary's name (I haven't seen it) but it's out there.

I rented it on netflix. Thought it was average actually but worth it for the shots of post WW2 Japan.

No, can't say I've even heard of it. Sounds interesting though.

I did those in order to start discussions about the films.

9 times out of 10 they got no replies at all, aside from an occasional "No one gives a frick about that old shite" from Acneboy.

You seem to know something about the subject -- feel free to steal my shtick. In fact anybody who sees an interesting movie coming up should join in -- the more the merrier, to coin a phrase.

You two should continue to both champion older films. I think the lack of response is directly related to the general film ignorance on this board.

And though I don't typically reply in those threads, I have used them as guides.

So cheers boys and keep 'em coming.

Lonely Place is a very interesting Bogie role. Solid storyline. GG oozed about as much naughtiness as ya could for those days. She was a great noir actress. Probably didn't have as much career success with the decline of noir. Would she have been a TMZ star or what with her personal life!

It is somewhat disheartening when you see threads about crappy reality shows getting more replies than threads about quality classics.
