So I'm new to the board, but I read it daily, I was wondering how do ya'll think Chavis' style defense will work with our personnel since it is new to our team?

Can't be any worse than last year. I like the aggressive style of defense. Pin your ears back and bring it.

Yeah I see a lot more pelini style to the defense as in the spring game, but I hope we can still be as surprising, unlike last years horrible season with a predictable d

I like how we'll have the best players on the field at all times.....Not that switch 4 players every single play where everyone is confused and out of position....I look for this years D to be much improved.

I am interested in seeing how many substitutions Chavis will use. While we used too many last year and players were often confused, I think a solid rotation is key in keeping players fresh, as well as keeping highly touted reserves committed to the program.

I think the Chavis defense will improve over last year's defense.

Instead of surrendering 51 to Florida, they'll improve to 41.

Not too shabby.

But I agree keeping people solid on the feild at all times with reserves, but they all have to know what they are doing unlike last year. I also disagree with too many subs because people need to learn how eachother play and if you have too many switches, the coheasiveness of the defense is ruined.

Did Chavis use a decent rotation at Tennessee over the past few years? I honestly never paid much attention to the Tennessee defense in my college years since I had better things to do at the time

The only thing I noticed about Chavis at Tenn was that Tenn never seemed to be blown out of games, as if they always had a chance, even with a horrible offensive, a solid defense will keep you in any game...

Chavis is a solid coordinator. However, it is difficult to try to rate him or make comparisons, because Fulmer's recuriting classes the last few years sucked. Chavis will have much more talent to work with at LSU. I look for them to be very good. With the talent LSU has on board, the coodinator only needs to be an experiecnced veteran coordinator with a good scheme. LSU did not have that last year. This team just needs a good scheme that they understand and are confident in. The talent will take care of the rest.

IMO we don't have the perfect personnel for his defense. Chavis seems like a guy who plays mostly zone. You need a great pass rush in order for that to excel. We have a good pass rush, but I don't think it's a great pass rush.

Truthfully, I think it will take 2-3 years for LSU has the perfect personnel for a Chavis defense.

It's not up to par with the 2007 team, but there are three experienced DTs and an All-SEC defensive end this year. The only question mark is at Tyson Jackson's spot, where Levingston, Aghayere, or someone else will have to step up.

There are also some great recruits who should be ready to contribute next year like Montgomery.

I think Chavis is a good dc, but I think the real value comes in the new position coaches. I would put up Chavis coaching linebackers, Brick coaching the d-line, and Cooper coaching secondary against any position coaches around. I like them all, but I really think Cooper will prove to be the real steal in that group.
