Sports Illustrated SEC Review has Ron Brooks starting at Strong Safety. Ive been away from the computer for awhile now, any truth to this or just a guess?

Posted this in another thread. Its from the LSU Media guide. Seems like its a toss up with Hatcher in the lead.

What makes you say Hatcher is in the lead? Is it because he is listed first in the media guide??
I honestly hope the coaches go with Brooks because despite his size he is an absolute playmaker and loves to hit. Hatcher has been equally impressive but I just love Brooks swagger.

I want brooks.no disrespect to hatcher but from what i've seen from brooks the dude i a head hunter. He lit some people up on special teams and there's nothing i'd like to see more than chad jones, ron brooks, harry coleman, and patrick peterson putting the hurt on opposing teams while competing to be the team's hardest hitter.

Hatcher is mentioned first in the text discussing the secondary. I don't have it in front of me, but distinctively remember thinking that after I read that part. I could be wrong...

Ron Brooks is bigger than Bob Sanders.

Why are our free safeties larger than our strong safeties?
Posted on 7/31/09 at 7:39 pm to Bad Cat
It wasn't always that way, Jesse Daniels was bigger than Landry while they were both here..

I'm a huge Brooks fan too, but at the end of the day just give me the guy that can cover a slot receiver the best.

it's just a move to get Brooks on tha field and let him make plays like I mentioned earlier, Les wants him out there and SS is the only spot available to get him in there. I say don't knock it until you see what he can do, if he starts flying around and knockin folks out, I don't think anyone will be complaining.

I was wondering that too. Seems like the standard in the past was to have a bigger strong safety used more for run support, with a faster smaller free safety used more in pass coverage. As such, wouldn't Chad Jones be a more prototypical strong safety with Brooks or Hatcher at free safety? Or is that an old school theory that no longer applies to modern defensive schemes?

Chavis likes his SS to be able to cover the slot some, like Berry did for Tenn. Brooks would be good at that.
And CJ is at free safety bc he's a great centerfielder. At his size and speed, he should be able to prevent a lot of plays deep. He has great ball skills.
This notion on the Rant that Jones isn't a great athlete who can't play safety, I have no idea why people have that. He won't be asked to cover 180 lb slot receivers at CB like Malveto did.
