1. Planescape: Torment
2. Silent Hill 2
3. Final Fantasy VII
4. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic I & II (I can't decide between the two. II was crippled by a non-ending and an overall unfinished product)
5. Metal Gear Solid

Okay story. Not anything that really made me want to play the single-player a second time.

I haven't beaten any of those games, but I've heard the stories are all excellent. Especially Bioshock.

Not sure why I couldn't get into Bioshock... guess I'm just burnt out on FPSs

Metal Gear Solid had a great story, it was great because if you played Metal Gear 1 and 2 you got all the inside quirks, but the game still wasn't too confusing if you didn't

*Begin Spoilers*
The way Psycho Mantis, Liquid(disguised as Miller), and Decoy Octopus played you like a was classic. "Now to deactivate Rex"-"Metal Gear Rex activated"...frick!

*End Spoilers*

Yeah, I loved FF7 and 10s story, 8 is my favorite, but the story seemed too convenient/campy towards the end.

Metal Gear Spoiler...kinda

The only thing I didn't like about Metal Gear Solid is how it wasn't a shock that Big Boss was Solid Snake's father. I remember playing MG 1 and 2 and not once do I remember BB being SS's dad. But in MGS, he says that he killed big boss knowing that he was his father.

Somewhere in my top 15.

It has some things going against it:

1. Massive amount of exposition, necessary for the first movie/game in a trilogy. When the game is constantly introducing you to new concepts, it tends to have a relatively skin-deep effect on you.

2. Borrows heavily from Star Wars. I don't need to explain this one... Bioware basically took Star Wars and altered it to fit a more realistic portrait of the future. And Star Wars is awesome of course, it's just that this game doesn't feel like anything new in the sci-fi department.

With that said, a few things that set Mass Effect apart from several game plots:

1. A developed, multi-faceted, and even sympathetic antagonist in Saren.

2. Mature ethical dilemmas. The KOTOR games tended to have these, but they were usually no-brainers depending on how you chose to play through the game. Mass Effect forces you to make some at the margin decisions that don't invoke a knee jerk, "I'm a good guy so I'm gonna pick this" response.

But with all of that (and the game is very impressive. I'm a huge fan of Bioware and this is the best next-gen RPG IMO), the story still fits a sort of "World domination" cliche on a larger scale. It also has a ton of military cliches. At any rate, there's my unnecessary qualification for why it's further down the list. I'm pretty bored.

I always thought Max Payne I had an awesome story line.

God of War I was pretty good as well.

I haven't played enough different games to be an authority though.

JMHO.
