Orlando Magic

The Magic are putting together a serious one, two and in some cases three punch.
PG: Jameer Nelson, CJ Watson (likely), Anthony Johnson
SG: Vince Carter, Mikael Pietrus, JJ Reddick
SF: Rashard Lewis, Matt Barnes
PF: Brandon Bass, Ryan Anderson
C: Dwight Howard, Marcin Gortat, Aluminum Foyle
The other thing that is particularly remarkable, is that all four SF and PF are interchangeable, as is Pietrus and Vince. We are set up extremely well for the postseason and (please don’t let it happen) an injury should that occur. Either way Otis is my hero, and I don’t think that there is a question anymore as to who the best team in the NBA is.

I still think someone over pays for Gortat.
But i really like Pietrus coming off the bench, he showed some potential to be a solid starter one day

3rd best team in the east next season

I'm a hornets fan first, but since the Magic got Bass, I will root hard for them. Hope they get a bunch of nationally televised games.

am I the only one that thinks Cleveland woulda been better off with Barnes than Moon? at least he was probably cheaper. nice pickup by the Magic

No shite, the Magic lost a lot IMO.

the Lakers? - Without Odom and Ariza they are not the best team in the West. Artest is a really good player but he does not make up for two good players leaving.
the Celtics? - Garnett will be back, maybe at full force, but he is 35 and they have the oldest squad in the history of the NBA.
the Cavs? - Shaq is not what he used to be, but he is good, LeBron is a phenominal but he will be playing with a lot of pressure in his last year in Cleveland.
I still think the Magic are better.

they won with defense more than their 3 point shooting last year, and they will be a worse team defensively this season IMO. losing hedo hurts also

+1, watch out for the wizards in the SE division this year.

Who did they lose on defense? Battie played 6 mins a game once a week, Rafer was horrible on D, and Lee while decent, got caught in the air during the playoffs about 15 times and was in foul trouble in the Celtics and Lakers series.
First of all, Hedo was a torreador on defense and Bass and Barnes are an upgrade. The Defense is keyed on the Defensive Player of the Year Dwight Howard and he is not going anywhere, further he can go for the block more without having to worry about the rebound since we have Bass and Barnes down low. Also with Rashard playing Small Forward, his natural position, his 6-11 height gives him a huge rebounding advantage over the guy who is covering him.

Is Odom officially gone? Artest > Ariza IMO

Rasheed is going to make a big impact IMO. They may be the front runners.

They gave up pretty much nothing for Shaq - it was a great improvement. I don't think Lebron has pressure on him - the rest of the team and the franchise will though.
The East will still be the Big3 up front, but each of them got better. I think losing Hedo will really hurt the Magic. I don't know if Vince brings that chemistry they need.

only their best perimeter defender and replaced him with a guy that has no interest in playing defense at all.
and the lakers are probably not losing odom, the celtics would have whipped the magic last season with a healthy KG, and the cavs probably would have done the same with shaq to body up dwight. they definitely would have with shaq and the additions of parker and moon to add some length on the perimeter. if lebron goes into video game mode on orlando again in the playoffs next season they won't have enough advantages at the other positions to win IMO

like what besides Hedo? and isn't that offset by Vince? not to mention 2 dirty work guys

So, with 5 major assumptions the Magic are not the best team next year.
OK.

what on earth would make you think the magic will be the best team in the entire league next year? especially after the arse whipping the lakers put on you in the finals. your team lucked up by getting to face an injury riddled celtics team, that orlando still struggled with, and then a cavs team that they had tremendous matchup advantages over. there were probably 3 teams in the west that would have smoked you in the finals
Posted on 7/21/09 at 10:13 am to geauxgiacomo
to say there is "no question" orlando is the best team in the league is fundamentally wrong.
three or four teams are at least on par with the magic.
