Q/A for first time Team USA observers (game 1:30pm central)

Why does the stadium sound like mosquitos?
well they gave out these shitty plastic horns that soccer fans (South African in particular) love
thousands of people blowing on them = that noise. yes it's annoying. if you turn the channel b/c of this you hate America
Is Brazil the best team in the world? I remember hearing this from about 1990 to the present.
No. Spain is. We just beat Spain 2-0 to make it to the finals
Does this game have any impact on the World Cup?
No. World Cup qualifying is completely separate
this tournament is a practice run for the WC hosts. There was/is a lot of doubt about SA's ability to host the cup
How good is the US team?
we're solid. we can play great, but we can also play horribly. we generally play really well against top teams
our region is north/central america and the carribean, and we dominate our region. our biggest rival is mexico, and we've owned them recently. other than mexico, our region sucks for the most part
Who are our stars?
watch our lone striker, jozy altidore. he's NINETEEN years old and is quality. he's our future
we're easily the definition of a team. jozy has star potential, but he's not there yet. landon donnovan is the face of US soccer, but he never took that step to stardom. our 3rd best player is out this game because he got a red card last game
when we play well, we're much more than the sum of our parts. however due to our lack of top talent, if we're not playing well and/or playing as a team, we can look downright awful

I know I've asked this question.. but someone else might.
What is stoppage time? Or how long is it?

the clock doesn't stop in soccer
stoppage time is the amount the ref awards at the end of halves to make up for lost time
it's an estimate, and usually 1-3 minutes. sometimes if there are lots of cards, injuries, and subs, it will be more like 5. i think i've seen 10 before after a serious injury took a lot of time out

We should have done this from the beginning. It would have saved me from starting a few threads.
(FWIW, I've never asked about the buzzing)

I think it could certainly have a bearing on what seed we get placed in when the WC groups get established. The more notoriety we have, the better our chances to bump up from a 3 seed to a 2 seed, imhfo.

maybe so if the world cup seeded teams outside of the top 8

seeding doesn't change your group, does it?
it's all bout what group you "randomly" get assigned

In the group stage, teams compete within eight groups of four teams each. Eight teams are seeded (including the hosts, with the other teams selected using a formula based on both the FIFA World Rankings and performances in recent World Cups) and drawn to separate groups. The other teams are assigned to different "pots", usually based on geographical criteria, and teams in each pot are drawn at random to the eight groups. Since 1998, constraints have been applied to the draw to ensure that no group contains more than two European teams or more than one team from any other confederation.[27]

Lord knows I've tried and tried, but I just can't watch more than 15 minutes of soccer.
