Without losing the High Res..... if it would take a long time don't worry about it... but I thought it would be cool if the liquid was changed to purple & gold
I toned down the image from 3200x2400 below

Awesome Job
I really need to start playing around with Gimp or Photoshop

You really should! Even if you don't quickly get a handle on image alteration, you can easily do simple color changes (not saying that your request was a simple one) using various "sliders" available.
The more you mess with various tools, the more fun you'll have... You seem to have the personality/sense of humor to put these programs to good use

Which one would you recommend for a newb like myself?

I was born and raised on Photoshop, so my opinion is slightly biased. I've used Gimp and have installed it on my friends' computers for their use... It took me a little figuring out because the interface, while similar, operated totally differently.
If you have access to Photoshop (and I don't mean pirated) - then use it. If not, cut your teeth on Gimp.

Why not pirated versions?
